About this listen

Theft of a lifetime? Successful. Surviving that very theft? Problematic.

Chase and his ragtag crew of criminals, including a very reluctant noble heir, have just pulled off the impossible. They've stolen not one, but two, legendary decks of power. Light and Darkness.

With that kind of magic, they would be able to live like kings... you know, if the entire Church of the Circle and the Lightborn nobility didn't want them dead. So yeah, no pressure.

All they need to do is escape and get to the Elemental Towers in Earth's Ward. It's the perfect hideout for a crew with a death warrant, and it is home to the largest Library on Ordei. The place that prides itself on housing the original Elemental decks. Such shiny decks…

Remember: It's only a crime if you get caught!

Dungeons and Dragons meets Magic: The Gathering in this epic fantasy deckbuilding LitRPG.

I only got about halfway through this before having to give up.

The first was a story about a group of thieves fighting with their everything to win their freedom from oppression, and it ended with things looking up, a clear path to freedom in sight.

You'll either be happy or unhappy to know what they do with said freedom. I'm sure you can guess where I land.

This merry band of thieves trade one form of servitude for another. WILLINGLY.

Then the story turns into an anime military academy disaster fest where every new character is completely unlikable and our cast'a worst traits are constantly highlighted because I'm in such a bad mood now.

Cilia isn't smart so much as she's literally an exposition dumper, and the only reason she may appear like the clever one is because everyone else is so comically stupid.

Liam: 'Durr, I don't know, I wasn't listening, there was a pretty dark born girl giving me looks.'

This is a real thing he says.

Also, all the growth and power Chase earned in the first book? Completely pointless. The author seems to delight in having his main protagonist constantly have his pants pulled down and humiliated - this only makes his cocky, lasset faire attitude infuriating, not endearing.

I could say more (so much more), but this review risks devolving into a hate post.

This sequel feels like a different series from the first book, starring completely different characters. I hated it, I also only got 50% of the way through, YMMV.

A complete rugpull and disaster of a sequel
