Never owe a fox a favor…

With his body cultivation at least temporarily under control, Sen sets out for his long-awaited reunion with the divine turtle, Elder Bo. It is a fraught meeting where Sen learns hard lessons and unwelcome truths, and despite his advancement, his old obligations still threaten to pull him back.

Years before, the nine-tail fox Laughing River did Sen a “favor.” The fox is finally ready to collect on that debt. Of course, if you give a fox an inch, they’ll try to take a mile.

The trifling matter that Laughing River wants Sen to accomplish is retrieving an old relic from some ruins. What could be simpler for a powerful core cultivator?

Yet, the demon is in the details, and Laughing River left out a few. Like the horde of devilish beasts, the potent wards, the fact that the ruins are the size of a city.

Sen will have to draw upon all his power, threatening the newfound balance in his body cultivation, to fulfill his obligation, or else risk the eternal enmity of a nine-tailed fox.

This has been an excellent series thus far. For that reason, I gave four stars, not because the writing was bad or editing, or narration was bad. All of that was good. This genuinely felt like it was a filler episode from an old cartoon series. There was minimal substance with marginal at best character growth, but it was a well told bit of a story. It genuinely felt like you could skip it though and not miss anything.

Filler episode?

This was a good story, but the whole thing felt like a side quest. A minor distraction to add a few more characters to the story.

Good but

I liked this one as much as the previous books. But, while it has action, MC thinks about things more. Will be continuing my support for this series.

More introspection than pile of bodies in the street.

Seemed a bit fillery but not egregiously so, stuff happened, he gets stronger, maybe a bit too much banter and not enough plot but there was definitely some stuff for the future. I would definitely say didn’t deserve the 1 star review i first saw on day 1 that put me off for a few days, glad i got it in the end. Interested for the next book tho there wasn’t really much set up for what comes next

Not my fav so far but didn’t deserve that 1 star i saw

the boilerplate is that when it comes to a sequel I'm looking for what made the last book worth it and then some. I'll check out a new book through Kindle unlimited and that's how I found this author and this story. if I like the story then I'll double back and buy the audiobook. I like the story so much that I binge the first three books back to back. we got the book four I'm not sure if there was a delay in releasing the audiobook or if I was having an issue with my card, but I ended up reading the ebook version. absolutely love the first 80% of the book and hated the last 20% just as much. suffice it to say I didn't buy the audiobook. all that Goodwill reset to zero and so when book 5 came out I went back to Kindle unlimited and read the ebook. it did help Revitalize things, but I decided to hold off on picking up the audio version for the last two books as I was still gun shy about continuing on with the series. this book comes out and I am cautiously optimistic for it. as a general rule I am reluctant to read reviews, but there was only one and it was bad. with the aforementioned history I figured I'd better read it and see what was up. the description the reviewer gave was one in which the main character this seemingly hounded throughout this entry by the female characters. at the very least I would find that incredibly annoying. so I started down the road of the E version through Kindle unlimited despite the fact that was really kind of looking forward to picking up the audio. the narrator does a fantastic job. I got through the first couple of chapters and decided that I just go ahead and roll the dice even though if I make a mistake I can't return it unless I use a credit which I didn't have. I'm happy to say that it wasn't actually like what that solo reviewer made it out to be. yeah the main character and for supporting characters that take up the vast majority of this book. we've got a grandpa Fox and his granddaughter. we've got a spirit Beast and a sec cultivator. the granddaughter and the cultivator are female characters. in their moments of screen time they vacillate between annoyance at the main character and shock at what he's doing. yeah there might be a little fear here and there but they don't really range farther than that. that still leaves the main character and the two other supporting characters plus all the action and the descriptions and whatnot. I'm happy that I picked up the audio version. I don't know what my decision will be when the next book comes out. I wouldn't call this book a home run but I would recommend it to anybody reading this review. I'd even say that everybody who had a hand and bringing the story to us, the audiobook listeners deserves a round of applause.
