About this listen

Why is this relationship so hard? It is so invigorating to know that we don't have to stay stuck. Even if we're not the one struggling with narcissism, we can change the way we relate to the people who do.

Find out if the stress in your relationships with family, friends, or at work is unknowingly caused from narcissism in yourself or others... Narcissism is actually much more common than we may think and, in reality, most of us have some of these characteristics.

You Might Be a Narcissist If... was written by two psychotherapists and a psychiatrist with decades of both personal and professional experience with narcissism. It is filled with many interesting-to-hear stories taken from the authors' or their clients' lives that clearly demonstrate examples of narcissism. A narcissism questionnaire and practical suggestions are given for dealing with narcissism whether it's in your spouse, a co-worker, or even yourself.

The book answered the questions that have been plaguing my mental space for a while. The material put things into a balanced perspective for me. Carefully chosen examples were highly relatable and authors’ explanations of them illuminating. Specific language for communicating personal needs with the goal of building more pleasant relationships was a gem. None of us very born with the knowledge of it and some of us did not have to luxury of such language modeled to us. I also appreciated that the book was concise. To it delivered what it promised

Very helpful and balanced look at narcissism

Glad I purchased and listened to this book. The information and articulation make the content affirming and almost axiomatic. So many examples and points elicit the response: “Of course, that makes so much sense.” Also great tools on moving forward. Agree that this book does not dive into the damage & dysfunction that narcissists yield, but that is not a stated goal of the book. For those just starting to question the world of narcissists in which we seem to live (if only bc we all have a few of those traits), this book will not leave you guessing about who the stronger narcissists were/are in your world, and how to deal with them and any residual damage.

Too short. Doesn't cover enough about marriages. Other than that it's a good and helpful book.

I am just now waking up to the fact that I have way too many narcissistic traits. I can't believe that I've lived this long without knowing all of the things I have done to hurt my wife and loved ones. It's almost as if there has been a parasite in my brain making me act against my own true intentions of being a loving, supportive, and caring husband.

I feel totally sabotaged and shocked by the person I have been for so many years. Especially because I thought I was emotionally aware. I thought I had been good at apologizing when I've made a mistake, which most narcissists never do. But, even if my narcissism isn't as extreme as never apologizing, the thing about apologies is that it is completely empty if you don't follow through with changing the offending behavior.

I hope I'm not too late to save my marriage. If my wife and I didn't have kids, I would tell her to run from me and never look back. I can see and feel the hurt in her that I've caused. I never wanted to hurt her and I truly don't deserve a second chance.

Because of this book and many more that I will read, I am grateful to have a 2nd chance. For the first time, I feel like I can see myself clearly. That's what real change requires. I WILL rid myself of the monster inside of me.

This is the most helpful book I have found so far on the topic of narcissism. I am a 49 year old female who was in a 19 year marriage with someone who would certainly qualify as a person with narcissistic personality disorder. I was not aware of it while in the marriage, but after getting a masters in counseling once the marriage ended, I can say that he is a true narcissist. After being single for 5 years, I got into a new relationship. My “narcissist radar” was on full alert. I did see a few red flags, but when my new “person” wanted to do couples counseling AND got his own therapist I thought there was no way he could be a narcissist. Fast forward another 5 years - 2.5 of them in remarriage. I can’t escape the feelings of confusion when I’m being accused of acting in ways that HE is acting (projection). I can’t escape the utter frustration I feel when I express a need that somehow “steps on toes” and the entire thing ends up being my fault. This book gives such accurate depictions of what goes on in a marriage with a narcissist that I had difficulty listening to that chapter. The advice for people who are less involved with a narcissist is very good and helpful. I just know for myself - I can’t continue in a marriage with a narcissist. I can definitely empathize with the reasons they are the way they are. But my nervous system has been screaming at me to get out of this relationship. This book has really helped me to see that is exactly what I need to do.

I started reading this book thinking I was a narcissist. I found through this reading that I came from a narcissist family. I found so many answers and I am ready for forgiveness. Life change for me by discovering things I never understood.

Gave me answers that I did not expect

So many real life comparisons to display points of view. Very informal, and I'm so glad to of gained this knowledge. Hoping to grow myself and relationships seeing things from a newer point of view.
