Publisher's summary

The Monster Under the Bed is a practical exploration of how to navigate sex and relationships while coping with depression. JoEllen Notte will help you understand how sexual function is affected by depression and what keeps us from effectively addressing it. Heavily informed by the author’s research, including surveys of over 1,000 people and interviews with close to 200, this is the first book of its kind. With practical tips and real-life examples, this is both a guidebook for people with depression and the people who love them, as well as a reference tool for mental health professionals.

Perfect in every way!

With 20 years in psych, 25 years in BDSM, and a lifetime of persistant depressive episodes, I can say without a doubt this is the best book I have ever read on sex and depression. It is also the best book I've ever read or heard of for helping people to understand what depression is, how to communicate with others, how to discuss sex, meds, and conditions with Dr.'s. Phenomenally done JoEllen Notte!

The audio is pretty good and the authors narration is excellent.

Validating and Actionable

This book was amazingly validating. It helps to know you're not alone in navigating the tricky waters of sex and depression. Sometimes, you just need to hear that. The relatable experiences of her research participants and her own experiences made this book so wonderful to read--these experiences can feel isolating, so knowing others have experienced the same things is earth-shattering.

Notte was able to accomplish an amazing feat in this book. She tackled a taboo topic, added in thorough academic research, and mixed it all up with relatable antidotes and even a pinch of humor. This created a book that was enjoyable to read, relatable, and provided actionable steps for creating change is change is desired.

These are the conversations we need to be having and I'm so grateful that JoEllen Notte has started these conversations. The world needed this book. I know I needed it.

Wasn't very helpful

This book is mostly a compilation of what others say about their sex lives or experience. I personally didn't find the book helpful and wish the author had gotten a narrater to do a proper job at reading the book. Overall, the book was OK - 2 Stars.
