Publisher's summary

Build a healthy, supportive relationship with your loved one living with BPD.

How would you feel if you weren’t able to think beyond black-and-white thinking? What if your sense of self depends on what you believe others want from you? What if you struggled with relating to things in the present because the past rooted there? What if your future is too overwhelming to think about? What if you didn’t trust yourself to be alone because you just weren’t sure you were safe with you?

If you can understand any of these, you might have a small idea of what it’s like to live with borderline personality disorder (BPD).

BPD is a misunderstood and often misdiagnosed condition, and for those who love a person with BPD, it can be truly heartbreaking. This book isn’t just to shatter the common misconceptions about BPD, but to give friends or family members hope that it can be manageable with the right guidance. In this book, we’ll focus on:

  • Understanding BPD from signs/symptoms to diagnosis
  • Knowing the difference between BPD and other personality disorders
  • Treatment plans, including how loved ones can play a role
  • Suggestions for supporters who love someone with BPD
  • What loved ones with BPD want us to know
  • Tips on helping the person with BPD with forward-thinking
  • How can we best advocate for those with BPD

If you’ve chosen this book, you already know from experience the nitty gritty of how borderline personality disorder looks, and feels. We’re here to help you understand the condition at a deeper level, see it through the eyes of the sufferer, and help you to help them in the most loving and empowering way.

The most important thing we hope you’ll take away with you is that as scary as things may seem at times right now, it won’t always be that way. BPD is only a small part of who your loved one is, and they should never feel defined by it.

And we’ll show you how to guide them to that mindset.

Very Informative and Insightful!

I have a friend who was diagnosed with BPD and this book has helped me a lot to understand what she goes through. I only wish I had read it sooner. This book is an excellent resource. And it is very educational. Ms. Linda Hill describes what a person who suffers with BPD goes through. The book is well written and very easy to understand. I now feel better prepared to help my friend who has BPD.

I liked when Hill discussed in Chapter 1 how BPD is sometimes misdiagnosed by clinicians. After reading this book I am filled with hope for my friend who is struggling with BPD.

I especially liked Chapter 4 where I learned how to help my friend without enabling her. And in Chapter 5 I discovered how to be a strong advocate for a sufferer. I also liked the voice of the narrator Vicky David. It was pleasant and soothing to listen to.

Very interesting

Borderline Personality Disorder is a great audiobook by Linda Hill. I really learned a lot about Borderline Personality Disorder. I have to admit I knew nothing about the subject before listening. I didn’t even know exactly what the disorder is before listening. It was really nice to hear all the information. There is a lot of great information in the audiobook. At the start of each chapter a quote is shared. I don’t remember who shared the quote but it was in chapter 2. The quote was “A small crack doesn’t mean you are broken.” I really liked that quote. The audiobook is really helpful a easy to listen to.

An Honest and Empathetic View of BPD

I really appreciated the following points especially:
"One way to look at it from the sufferer's point of view is by thinking of it as having nerve endings that are constantly exposed and vulnerable."
"Misunderstanding the difference between mood disorders and personality disorders" (I was guilty of this)
"Life for them is emotionally painful, like living with untreated burns."

This is an incredibly helpful guide if you have a loved one with BPD or just want to learn more about the topic. Not only did I not know much going in, but I realized afterward what I did "know" was incorrect. I have people in my family with mental health issues. This is a really impressive and comprehensive guide that gives you straightforward advice on how to help loved ones—and really importantly, something that a lot of people forget: how to help ourselves through it. It's so easy to get absolutely lost and overwhelmed when you're trying to help someone you love, and it's so helpful to have advice about the best ways to help from someone who has the experience of borderline personality disorder. I wish I had heard this book long ago.

Beginning my third listen to this book and learning more each time!

This is the first book I’ve read or listened to that doesn’t blame the parents of BPD diagnosis in their child. The step by step descriptions of behaviors to be on the lookout for and describing what the sufferer may be feeling is so very helpful. Thank you for writing this book.

Great book on borderline personality disorder

I like this book because it offers structure and answers, two things people with borderline personality disorder need help with. It is good for those with BPD as well as support, such as family and professionals to listen to. The great thing about the book is that it starts off by saying many do recover. That is a hopeful notion, especially for borderlines who feel their life is over and there is nothing there can be done. This book is a beacon of hope. Nice work! I would recommend it to anyone interested in borderline personality disorder, or BPD. The reader has a nice voice and if its too slow you have the option to speed it up.

Love!!! I'm absolutely blown away!

I've had suspicious thoughts about having BPD. I lost my mother Jan 24th of 2022, due to a misdiagnosis of covid, and It really pushed me to learn more about myself, and why I have felt the way I've felt my entire life. I found myself sobbing at parts of the book because it felt like it was written about me or to me. I've never had The ability to "put a face" to my emotional, unexplainable inner turmoil I feel I've suffered since I was a little girl. I'm 39 and it took my mother passing and my 7 years of working with mental illness to realize I'm not crazy and that it's something I can't help. I'm starting back to a psychiatrist Monday before my mom's 1 yr anniversary of passing, and I think the way I had the appt, found this fabulous audio book m, and pinpointed my disorder, I'm excited. for the first time in life, I have a relief and a sense of hope. I thought I was just a grumpy "bad word" all the time with outrageous explosions and ridiculous excessiveness and not a healthy relationship in my life. I'm only disappointed that I wasn't able to figure this out earlier and be able to start my journey of developing coping skills and the ability to know how to handle my emotions. I have a six-year-old that I am trying to raise open and honestly. I want to be transparent appropriately, with him so he knows what runs in our family, and he can be hyper-vigilant and aware of his own behavior m; being able to head it off at the pass and always be bale to come to me with anything...because I've been there. I'm beyond thrilled I found this audio book. I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter, and despite it being from the caretaker's point of view, I still was able to learn so because of seeing it from the outside rather than only the inside of my head. I was absolutely denamored with every word and could not relate more. I feel like this book was the catapult that shot me back into reality this reality where I was able to make an appointment to get back my life. I hope I come across more books about BPD from this author come or any author, and I'm excited to read more of any of the author's other books. If you or someone you know you believe is suffering from BPD or any other meant illness, reach out to the nearest professional and never give up hope! There is nothing that can't be looked into or helped. I assure you, you are worth it! Thank you Linda Hill, for writing this book that has given me peace and hope for my future!

Brings hope to those trying to help

This book is a quick read with general and practical guidance for family and friends without medical knowledge. It is not exhaustive of BPD info, but picks out what is generally relevant all with an encouraging tone of hope. As I read and felt the feelings of exhaustion while they described what all the supportive people needs to do and be, the author took care in acknowledging the difficulty of dealing with BPD of a loved one, and it takes a community to be helpful, though the illness is very personal and isolating.

Hits just right. So good.

The book: Borderline Personality Disorder by Dr. Linda Hill is such an accurate and comprehensive resource for people who suffer from BPD. The book provides an overview of the diagnosis and treatment of BPD along with case studies from real life individuals who have experienced the disorder firsthand. It also includes helpful tips for coping with BPD including exercises and self-help strategies.

While I simply downloaded this book out of curiousity, I learned that people with BPD often struggle with self-image and identity. They may feel like they can never be good enough or that they constantly need to prove themselves to others.

I'd say that this book is amazing! I listened it in one day because I couldn't put it down. It's well narrated and has great insights into Borderline Personality Disorder. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about this condition or who is struggling with someone who has BPD.
