About this listen

Hardcore Self Help: F**k Depression is the follow-up to the best-selling F**K Anxiety. In this book I take the information, tips, and insights that I have gained as a psychologist and translate them into language that doesn't suck. This is the self-help book for people who don't usually like self-help books.

In Hardcore Self Help: F**K Depression, I talk to you like a friend. That means I speak directly to you, without psychobabble. Instead I tell you why your brain is such a troll. I explain why you have literally no energy or motivation. I tell you why people are so terrible at offering help. Best of all, I tell you how to take realistic steps toward solving these and many other issues caused by depression.

a must

I was at a serious low with my depression and knew I needed something to help me out of that darkness. On a Sunday night, few options exist. By the Grace of God I was lead to looking at a this Audible. OMG!! What a gift!! I didn't think it would have been possible, but I laughed so much! I did cry, too, but only because Robert has an incredible story telling gift that he is able to teach about depression on a simple scale while creating a safe and compassionate space to be vulnerable so emotional growth can occur.
I highly recommend this book.

Life altering

I found this book after I discovered (and then binge consumed) the author’s brilliant podcast.
Right now, I am working my way out of my lowest and longest depressive spells to date. As someone who lives with GADD, depression and anxiety have slowly just become my “normal.” I now understand that it doesn’t have to be.
Dr Duff’s insight both in this book and through the Podcast, has been a game changer for me. I am now beginning the process of finding my own therapist (I’m an adult now, but my last therapist was one my parents picked for me and it wasn’t a great experience), which has taken me years to wrap my brain around. I also have new tools and methods in my arsenal to help me through those moments when it feels like nothing could possibly help.
I know I have a long road ahead, but I’m ready to start the journey and I owe a great deal of that readiness to this book.

Easy to understand!

I was cautious at first because most books on psychology are written for psychologists, with a lot of technical terms that one needs an education in psychology to understand. Not this one. Plain and simple English and that goes a long way when someone like myself, who has only had an interest in psychology, wants to learn how to better handle and work at fixing my depression and anxiety.

Thank you Robert Duff.

A must for anyone who needs help, or needs understanding

This book is a fearless and soothing explanation of one of the most misunderstood and terrifying boogeymen to afflict the world - depression. Dr. Duff takes a lighthearted but unflinching look at the monsters living inside our own heads, or those of our loved ones, and shines a light on the evil little beast. It bravely confronts terrifying subjects (and I mean real bravery, his approach would send less stout-hearted healers running to the hills for fear of liability), and brings the most healing salve of all - understanding. With understanding comes certainty, and the more certain we are, the less fear we have.

“Fuck Depression” is for anyone who feels alone in the dark, held hostage by unwanted things in their own minds. It’s also for those who are friends, family or especially in relationships with someone who struggles with this internal vampire that keeps our lives from being what they could be.

I’ll also mention that if you’re a bit nerdy, this one is particularly for you. I suspected he was an old school D&D player and at the very least a video gamer from the outset, but he leans into it hard in the end. This makes you love him for it, because it gives him the quality of unpretentious self awareness that so many therapists lack.

My only request of Dr. Duff is that if there is to be a second edition, he double down on it his approach and entitle it “F**k Depression Right In The Eye!”

First Self Help Book on Depression

Thank you for writing a book about a tough subject with some satire. This is my first Self Help book on depression and it was nice to laugh a little. I still have a ways to go but it is nice to know I am not alone. I think I will read it again.
