About this listen

The bestselling author of Undoing Depression offers a brain-based guide to help us finally get rid of the bad habits that plague us.

We humans tend to get in our own way time and time again - whether it comes to not speaking up for ourselves, going back to bad romantic partners, our umpteenth diet, or engaging in any of a range of bad habits we just can’t seem to shake. In Rewire, renowned psychotherapist Richard O’Connor, PhD, reveals why our bad habits die so hard. We have two brains - one a thoughtful, conscious, deliberative self, and the other an automatic self that does most of the work without our attention. Using new research and knowledge about how the brain works, the audiobook clears a path to lasting, effective change for behaviors that include:

  • procrastination
  • overeating
  • chronic disorganization
  • staying in bad situations
  • excessive worrying
  • risk-taking
  • passive aggression
  • self-medication
  • and more

Bringing together many different fields in psychology and brain science, Rewire offers a refreshing, science-based new paradigm for readers of Charles Duhigg and Frank Lawlis.

Written for me

This book spoke to me. The self-hate quiz and other exercises taught me a lot about myself and I have already started trying to be more mindful and to wear my raincoat and let the stress roll right off of me :) Feeling hopeful.

Monotonous

I couldn't get through this without falling alseep. The narrator has a beautiful, deep, rich voice, but he was so monotonous that I kept falling asleep. I'll get through this book one day- if I can stay awake long enough!

Must read multiple times

At first I felt like this book only offered the explanation for my bad habits but, after listening to the audio book multiple times, it gave me insight into what I need to do the change.

Changing isn't easy but, you can do it!

Changes that mean something take time but there are methods that can help, many are described. Great examples and illustrations to help you see and begin to understand the root causes. With deep examination and noteing what got you painted into a corner, you can make changes. Practicing those changes you can learn to make changes that become automatic so the changes continue. It's hard work and it's best done with the help of true friends and perhaps a good therapist but, you CAN MAKE CHANGES!

A lot of insight on Meta thinking.

My younger brother got angry because of how well this book described his negative emotions and how it was easy to get through them. Then it also described his anger and how he shouldn't be angry at the truth.
Best car pool ever.
