About this listen

After saving the world, a reluctant young hero finds himself targeted for not having powers, in the third book of this action-packed superhero series.

The Black Death is dead. After hiding in plain sight for more than a decade under the guise of Captain Dawn, the most powerful empathic mimic who ever lived stepped out from the shadows once more to unleash terror and destruction upon the world. But in his moment of apparent triumph, when all hope seemed lost, the Black Death was defeated by Matt Callaghan and Jane Walker, now known to everyone as Matt the Human and Lady Dawn.

Following their victory, Matt and Jane have become the ultimate celebrity couple. But with fame and fans come enemies. The US government wants to use a sample of Matt's powerless DNA to discover a way to strip people of their powers. But there are those who'd rather see Matt dead before that happens. Meanwhile, Jane and the other young superheroes of Morningstar Academy have taken up the mantle of the legendary Legion of Heroes, but the world isn't black and white—and it's not always clear how to help or who needs saving.

Cults and governments, superheroes and killers; all have plans for Matt, who's now stuck at home under permanent, smothering protection. And all are afraid of Jane, out there changing the world with her phenomenal powers. Though power alone may not be enough . . .

In the shadows, unseen forces lurk. And when the reality-hopping Time Child returns with a dire warning, Jane will have to choose between protecting humanity and saving the man she loves.

The third volume of the hit alternate-history series—with more than a million views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Disjointed Continuation

A continuation book that has way to much jumping around in the story and a lot of stuff that doesn't seem to have anything to do with the story.

NEXT PLZ

He’s cunning, she’s more than two dimensional, humor, pacing, emotional, if I have any complaint it’s how fast I finished this and how long it’s gonna take for the next book to come out. Uhhhhhh

Loved It, But the Cliffhanger Left Me Hanging!

This was an amazing third book in the series, though I do have some criticisms.

First, the cliffhanger ending was frustrating. I really dislike cliffhangers—they feel like a lazy tactic to generate excitement for the next installment. I wish it had been executed differently, but I'm still eager to pick up the fourth book when it comes out (hopefully this year).

Second, the romance felt forced. I didn't sense any chemistry between the two main characters in the first and second books, so their sudden pairing in this installment came across as abrupt. It might have been more effective if their relationship had been developed gradually over time.

Other than that, the book was excellent. I'm really curious to see how they'll handle the situation with Matt, who seems doomed from the start. Everyone wants him, yet without any special powers, he's perpetually confined to a safe house, relying on others for protection. That doesn't seem like a life he deserves. As hinted in the book, Matt has plans of his own, while Jane is determined to keep him safe—even if that means keeping him locked up. It'll be interesting to see where the story goes from here!

Almost needlessly written

As someone who was a fan of the first two books I was curious what this 3rd book would be. Especially since Audible didn't recommend it and I had to see through Amazon that there even was a sequel. The first two books had an interesting premise and a classic cast for a super hero story. I thought that book 2 ended on a strong note, a bit of a cop out with time travel but a strong note where the heroes won and the bad guy lost. The Jane got the recognition she wanted and became the super hero she always dreamed of being. Matt got to shine in a world where everyone was objectively superior due to diligently working in the one area he could to overcome some impressive odds.

Spoiler warning:

Book 3 however falls short where the first two succeeded in my opinion. Matt is still witty as ever, Jane still as blunt as hammer, but the rest of the story feels lacking. A flash forward to 6 months past the incident and things have quickly changed pace, as you would expect. From Matt using his mental discipline to overcome a world of powers to being a bird trapped in a cage and stuck in possibly one of the most co-dependent relationships I think I've ever read in a story. Jane being close to a literal hammer and that being just about all she's good for as she looks at every problem like a nail and showing signs that, if Matt weren't in the picture to curb her behavior, she would turn into one of the most tyrannical dictators on the planet.

Sure you can say that these are the characters as written, but after 6 months I would hope to see character progression, not regression and justification from their family members towards this unhealthy relationship. No one speaking up, not even a friend reaching out to point out how Jane keeps Matt locked in a gilded cage the entire book. All of the friendship being slowly built between Jane and other supporting characters seeming utterly forgotten as she constantly tells Matt she will brutally murder them for even the slightest infraction.

Oh and the rest of the story seems to follow a mysterious pair of brothers and an organization that gets touched on between the hour long chapters of super powered co-dependence that's slightly interesting. I'm really hoping that this is just a growing pains story in a larger world the author is building to. But for now, this book just felt like it didn't need to be written as book 2 ended on such a good note and told the story it was meant to tell.
