Publisher's summary

For those who are givers, carers, and empaths, a guide to focusing that energy on yourself—even if that feels frightening, from popular LGBTQ+ activist and advocate Jeffrey Marsh.

Like many of us, Jeffrey Marsh was conditioned to have an outward focus—to give to others, to be a good listener, and to be the one who gave the best advice. In Marsh’s case, it was a method of survival. Growing up genderfluid in an unaccepting family, Marsh did everything they could to meet the needs of others and not have needs of their own. And ultimately, this meant Marsh put themself in the backseat of their own life.

In this heartfelt and sincere book, Marsh shares their story and the lessons they learned on the path back to themselves. Whether you’re a survivor of abuse and trauma like Marsh or you’ve passively accepted that your worth ought to be defined by your usefulness to others, Take Your Own Advice will give you the confidence to lead your life on your terms, and to prioritize what’s important: you.

It’s time that you learn to put yourself first, to take care of yourself, and to ask others to listen to you for a change. You do give the best advice, after all!

Critic reviews

"It doesn’t cost us anything to let others be freely themselves, rather it is an invitation to us all to live more fully. Jeffrey is a light that inspires inclusion and freedom to be…just as we are."—Hilaria Baldwin, actress and entrepreneur, co-founder of Yoga Vida, and author of The Living Clearly Method

"I wish I had been friends with Jeffrey when they were growing up to give their beautiful soul a confidant. Their story feels universal, and deeply personal. Take Your Own Advice should be required reading for anyone who learned to sacrifice their own happiness to keep others happy."—Meredith Salenger, actress and activist

"At a time when 'self-care' can mean many things, Jeffrey Marsh's heartfelt memoir is a guide to self-love for the everyperson. And their story—one powered by audacity, truth and kindness—empowers us to be just as as assured and authentic as we are."—Tre'vell Anderson, author of We See Each Other: A Black, Trans Journey Through TV and Film

Valuable message from a beautiful person

This book gave me goose bumps, made me laugh and cry. I am not LGBT, and my point to saying this is that Jeffrey’s wisdom may have arisen from the difficult navigation imposed by being LGBT, but the wisdom applies to all of us. To all sensible people that felt out of place in a way or another, just from being who we are. It is a beautiful book, narrated from a beautiful person.

Thought Provoking and Introspective

If you’re already familiar with Jeffrey, this book will have you falling more in love with them. They share deeply personal stories with nuggets of wisdom sprinkled in. My favorite activity shared involved writing a letter to yourself at various ages recalling what you were like at that time, the good and bad you were going through and giving yourself encouragement and wisdom at that time. I’ve already found this to be helpful and therapeutic. Give this a listen.

Healing…

This was such a powerful book, and it felt like a hug for my inner child and the part of me that lived in the closet for so long.
I would recommend this book to anyone. Thank you so much Jeffrey, your work has changed my life and is helping me heal. I’m so glad I exist in the world at the same time as Jeffrey Marsh.🥹

Like listening to a kindest childhood friend.

I’m loving the entire book. I experience insights and healing that this particular author offers about being nonbinary and growing up as a Christian. Easy to listen to and simply nurturing to me.

Inspirational Story

I love Jeffrey’s enthusiasm and his ability to overcome so many obstacles in his early life. I appreciate the idea of taking one’s own advice but felt the title missed a little in that the discussion of taking one’s own advice was at the end of the book. I gave it more stars than I felt it deserved because I appreciated his enthusiasm and non conforming ideas. However, this book was marked as a book for, in part, caregivers. It totally missed the mark and should not be misinterpreted as such.
