Publisher's summary

Breeden has been developing unusual abilities - which aren't like any type of magic he's ever heard of before. But can he master his powers in time to help thwart the plans of a vengeful god?

Breeden Andehar grew up the son of a boatwright in a village far from the capital city of Arlon. At 16, he is given a chance to receive an education at the local monastery alongside three sons of nobility, a cloth merchant's daughter, and a clever orphan. Breeden and his new friends have their education cut short when a bitter rivalry between two brother gods spawns a conflict which threatens the entire Land.

A great start

I found the pacing, writing, and naration all to be very well done. Wish it was longer, but I appreciate the character development and world biulding.

A surprising gem

This was an unusually surprising gem, when I first read it via Kindle. I didn't have high expectations, only hoped to enjoy and lose myself in a tale. It was remarkably well-written. It was obviously very well planned, executed, edited and with great thought for each character and the world the author is building. I was seriously impressed! The main character is very appealing, and I am interested in and caring about the supporting cast. Top notch plot and the magic "system" seems unique. The author painted a picture of the initial town that really gave me a sense of being there.

It was a Kindle selection of mine, and I generally only read my Kindle books while about to go to sleep, and just want to be distracted for a bit. But this kept me up, and I was also taking breaks to sit in a comfy chair and read in the daytime. The novella I read next was okay, but the second volume was also outstanding in Kindle, even more so. All that said, this didn't work as well for me as an Audible. It was decent to listen to, but if it was my first exposure, I would not have rated it so highly.

Good story told poorly

Author is good but no story teller. If you find listening to fictional history classes then this book is for you. Otherwise I give it a pass. Hints at magic that never seems to show up.

Entire book just to setup for the next book which has been years in the coming. At this point I go with it never coming.

Award-wEnning... For Boredom

One of the most boring books I have ever read. The author has some talent, and the narrator is excellent, however the story is fit only for an intellectual 13 year old. Good luck finding one of those.

9 hours of nothing much

This was nine (9) hours of well written, well performed nothing much. This was not a book. This was an introduction to a larger story and would have fit well if this book was 27 hours instead of nine. This should be considered 'slice of life' instead of adventure fantasy. I am left feeling misled and annoyed with the author. If the goal was to entice me continue on to the next arc the author failed.
Was it well written? Yes.
How was the character development? Passable.
How was the story? Comatose. Do not listen to while driving.
