About this listen

Banished from his village, an archmage enters the mana-dry wastes.

Keiran, millennia old archmage, has managed to successfully control the reincarnation cycle and retain all of his memories and skills. That’s about the only thing that’s gone right. Mana seems to have all but disappeared, and a cabal of mages from a nearby city have been using the villagers of his new home as a mana farm for their own purposes.

How long was Keiran gone? Where did the mana go? Does it have anything to do with the missing moon from the sky or the bizarre loss of the written language from his first life? Why are the best mages on the level of bumbling apprentices? Filled with questions and determined to find answers, Keiran journeys to the city of Derro.

The Wolf Pack rules over the desert city, and if Keiran wants access to the knowledge they hold, he’ll have to fight for it, one bloody step at a time. For all his skill, he’s trapped in the body of a child in a world where mana is as scarce as gold.

Can he overcome a group of mages who’ve had decades to grow their power base, or will the Wolves of the Wastes drag him down and eat him alive?

I have been loving this series so far, I literally checked every day until the second book went on preorder after I finished the first. It has its flaws for sure but the good heavily heavily outweighs them. I’m interested in what happens next and will definitely be continuing on. Can’t wait for book three

Thoroughly Enjoyed

I had to stop after 5hrs, I really loved the premise and goals from the first book. The wineing and overthinking was too much in the first book and I was really hoping him being on his own would have at least sped up his thought process a little. It also feels like were back to step one with his magic too. In book 1 invisiblity was something expensive but still manageable, In book 2 it takes 6 cores worth for 2 seconds ? The price of magic is on a sliding scale for the authour so that just lets him add in another paragaraph wining about the mana desert again.

5hrs in.

I love when the main character doesn’t fumble over himself and understands who he is and knows exactly the type of person he is !

Progression !

a lot of books talk about how smart the mc is, this one shows you. most of the time the "smart" mc does stupid thing because the plot says so to facilitate some conflict. this book manages without making the smart person do dumb stuff.

an actually smart mc

I enjoyed the Journey and the destination book 2 took us on. my only issue is the consistent sentences about mama efficiency, I understand he has a kid size mana core. but after hearing it dozens of times it's annoying. Also Rip Tanner, wish Kieran could have helped that boy, but alas, he has enough students for the time being. excited to see him grow up and move on to exploring the rest of the world.

Finishing the foundation of the future

I will say it’s refreshing to actually have a smart and knowledgeable main character. It’s just honestly annoying listening to the main character stumble into stupid situations over and over and never learning anything. It is a little predictable as he gets everything he wants so maybe he is a bit over powered. This whole book was just him walking around killing people. It could be nice to include some less powerful characters that have more to lose and not kill then off like the street kid. Maybe grow some more side quests. The sister could also have had more time and like other books maybe give a chapter to two from her perspective. That is pretty much how the beginning before the end is but maybe not exactly the same so. I’m glad they didn’t kill of the parents or something dumb. It’s literally the only sense of humanity that he has.

Decent second book

excellent pacing and interesting story. nothing wrong with a main character that doesn't have "good guy" morals. I think he'd probably be lawful neutral? no issues when there's a call for killing but he doesn't revel in it.

lawful neutral
