About this listen

Sometimes dying isn’t even the worst part of your day.

Mark’s new life begins in the worst possible place—a burned-out village haunted by undead. Each morning these ravenous creatures disappear, only to return at night, driven by a relentless hunger. He'll need to stay low and think quick, because trapped and alone in the body of a child, he can’t level up in this new world. At least not yet.

Soon Mark will learn that even among the living, safety isn’t guaranteed. When the small town that he ends up in turns out to be at the center of a conspiracy that threatens the world, he'll need to uncover the truth before it's too late. Mark will need to find allies, gain levels, and face countless horrors in order to survive his second shot at life and prove that he's more than just a bog-standard hero...

With over 4 million views on Royal Road, this is no ordinary LitRPG. Bog Standard Isekai is a slow-burn, incremental, magical progression fantasy containing slice-of-life elements punctuated by moments of intense violence.

One of the better fantasy Isekai stories I’ve read this year.

I’m not usually a fan of the “adult in a child’s body” trope (in most anime and stories, it usually ends up creepy), but this one handled it pretty well. Having an adults memories was actually a bit of a hindrance bc he saw all the kids his age as children, so he couldn’t quite fit in.

<spoilers>

The world was interesting, and I liked the system overall. The MC gets a bit overpowered for the climax, but I liked the choice to change it something a bit more evenly paced. As amazing as illusions were used in this book, I’m actually quite interested in seeing what glass can do.

Looking forward to book 2

When a book truly delivers, I find it difficult to find the words to describe it. What makes this novel great isn't one thing, but all the many things that make all great novels great. The characters are likeable and loveable. The adventure is exciting, the world interesting, and the mysteries are revealed expeditiously. With great books, I find myself describing the book as not having many of the most common faults found in other novels or admiring small bits that are done particularly well, but that are not truly relevant to the book's quality; for example, the writer treats the idea of an isekai that results in an adult being placed in a child's body with a level of rationality that keeps it from becoming creepy or odd. While that's excellent, this isn't why the book is so wonderful. If I was forced to write a literary criticism, I could explain why I think it is brilliant in 2500 words, but that would be laborious and I doubt most people would read it. Instead I'm left apologizing and begging you to trust me. This is the good stuff. Enjoy.

Exceptional

A good twist on the genre the former life honestly doesn’t come into play and kind of just feels like a way to make the character more mature. The class system is good some of the magic is kind of clunky powerful characters can kind of just do stuff even if it doesn’t really fit there class. Well worth the credit I want book 2 I gave the performance a 3 because the female characters all have a strange wine in their voice not the end of the world and you get used to it the male characters are all good and the wine is more noticeable in the female children.

I was really impressed by this book. There was lots of twist and turns towards the end. Cannot wait for the next one.

Really good start

same old op merder hobo story. I would say better then some, it did have some twists but ultimately it still fell short as most of the genre tends to lean.

generic mostly

I am so happy I’ve listened to this book. I wasn’t too sure but I like the narrator and I like the summary so I gave it a chance and I wasn’t disappointed. This book was captivating and thrilling kept me on my toes and made me excited to keep listening, I can’t wait for book 2

Narrator and summary sounded great

Solid story that doesn't choose to focus on gimmicks or the mechanics of the system to make itself interesting. While this is a litRPG it also is just a good story. Narrator does an excellent job as well.

Genre Standout

Starts a little slow and the MC sounds a little whiny at first then it takes off and I want more! The characters grow in a reasonable arc and by the end you are invested in them loved it!
