About this listen

Rob didn't think of himself as anyone special, but when a pitch-black portal tried to wrap his best friend in chains, he stepped up without thinking and found himself ensnared instead.

His moment of heroism results in being torn away from everyone he knew and loved, kidnapped by an unknown force that leaves him with a note in his pocket stating: "Good luck."

After being thrown into the wilderness of Elatra, a hostile fantasy world ruled by levels, stats, progression, and bizarre video game logic, he finds himself entirely out of his depth. Armed with nothing but a sword and the clothes on his back, he sets out on his the first day, and almost dies. On the second day, he almost dies again. On the third, he began to notice a worrying trend. And almost dies.

It doesn't get any easier from there.

Overcoming the wilds is just the first step in his journey; the society of Elatra is incredibly hostile to humans, having just come off of a devastating war that left over half the population dead, and getting the locals to trust the last human in existence is a struggle in and of itself. Between being powerless in a world that hates him and suffering under a System that is altering his mind in unwanted ways, Rob quickly finds that monsters aren't nearly the biggest thing to worry about.

As far as LitRPG isekai adventures go, Rob drew the short straw in many ways. But that's okay - all the bullshit in the world won't keep him down. He'll carve out a place in this world with his bare hands if necessary. He'll survive, and then he'll thrive.

Whether anyone wants him to or not.

I would recommend it.

This book was hard to get into, but now I'm invested and I want more! I didn't love the narrator at first, he sounded, over the top is the best way I can describe it but I got used to him and then it was just Rob to me. The elves sounded robotic but then that was just an elf thing. So now that I know the characters a little better it seems like everything fits and I understand the choices that were made.

The story started slow and a little weird, more than I expected under the circumstances. Things happened, dumb jokes were made and I stuck with it. I got to know and like the characters and and their little problems in town. Then it got crazy!! Things happened in the world! Wonderful, Horrible, Insane things happened and I need to know more so I'm off the "read" the second book.

Good but some things....

This book is good I enjoyed it, the narrator does well, and a lot of the jokes and dialogue are actually funny. There are however, a few things that really bring it down.

The biggest thing is the leveling high. It's an unnecessary mechanism that I'm sure has an explanation down the road, but ultimately makes the lit rpg side of the book moot and boring. This mechanism could have been completely removed from the book and would have had almost no impact on the plot.

The second part is the whole psychological aspect of the book. It is genuinely hard for a writer who has never truly experienced taking a life or having the threat of their own life taken, to understand the psychological aspect, but what generally annoys the crap out of me is all these protagonists just having nervous breakdowns in combat..... You don't make it that far and then break down. Yeah years down the road when life changes and things are no longer fight flight you can have residual survival mechanisms, but this kind of emmotional break down garbage thst writers try to portray is almost always incorrect.

Good not great

I thought it was good. The author tried to bring in the aspect of the mental trauma that someone might go through if they were transitioned to another world with so many life threatening dangers, and so different. Usually these type of books have the MC easily rolling with the punches and not having any problems mentally.

Fantastic Book and Happy there are many more.

The only terrible thing about this book, are some of the reviewers you have to deal with.

The book is well written, the Narration is very enthusiastic, allowing you to feel the emotion and whimsy in the characters. And emotional it is, the story pulls you in and let's you feel every aspect that the characters experience.

How the Author places changes to his stats at the end of each chapter is nice as well as having full chapters when reading off his stat sheet. This allows you to easily skip them when you don't feel like hearing them all.

There are some reviews who didn't finish the book and somehow rate it 1 star based purely on how humans are treated in this book or leveling high in general. Admittedly it's poor, and makes it much harder for the MC, but in the story scenario it is completely believable and just one more obstacle he needs to overcome (and does so significantly by the end of the book to those that know him).

I mean so many people can't hide their negative feelings for those that are different than themselves. Now imagine if 8 years ago a race or religion was blamed by your leaders for having killed half of your friends and family and half the population of the world. Only the best of us would likely look at the situation logically and ignore that fact to judge the individuals objectively. And anybody putting 1 star for a review only for this fact, clearly isn't in that small minority.

I highly recommend.

Clapping hands

I wasn’t expecting much but was blown away by how good it was . I could’ve done without the character sheet at the end of every chapter.

Worth it but..

- SPOILER WARNING -

I almost passed on the book but I am a fan of the voice actor. The reviews were good so I gave it a shot. Very much worth it!

The book was very well written, the voice actor was flawless, the plot was good, and the character development was on point.

What I can’t get over is the negative effects that happen just from the main character leveling up. Like in every other story if the MC finds a way to grind and get levels or work out game mechanics to get ahead using knowledge from earth it should be a good thing.

The constant back and forth over leveling high, and having it a main point of the book sucks. This book/story would be way better without it.

Even with that crap mechanic in the book, this is still top five best litrpgs I’ve read and deserves five stars. I hope that mechanic goes away and this story keeps going. I also think that mc would be great at base building and hope that becomes a thing. Also, there were very many funny internal conversations that caught me off guard. Really happy the MC is hilarious.

Fun Isekai

Great fun and an excellent performance. His RPG mechanics are awesome as well. If you’re looking for a fun read with a modern man perspective, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Long winded

World / leveling mechanics are a bit too flat, at least in regards to exp, waaaay too videogamey. Constant reviews of skills/levels after every chapter which probably consist of an hour of book time. Character is way too sarcastic and not in an enjoyable, like I understand you want to make the character seem intelligent, but his demeanor and dialogue is so chaffing. The story and world overall is fairly interesting though, and skills gained through effort is nice aspect.
