Publisher's summary

James thought he would be just another adventurer in the world’s most anticipated dungeon delving VRMMORPG. But when he logs in, he soon finds out that he won’t be diving the dungeon - he will be creating it. Pretty awesome right?

At least that was what he thought when he boldly chose "Random" as his dungeon type....

Then he summoned his first mob. A fearsome, bloodthirsty demonic.... Chicken.

Still, Demonic Farm Animals are the least of his worries. The person who is supposed to be teaching him the ropes is a weirdly advanced AI pixie, who drinks too much and is overly fond of gambling. Oh, and some mysterious figure seems to be watching and judging his every move - so signing that NDA is feeling like less and less of a solid choice.

Either way, James is up for the challenge. Even if it means building a dungeon around kamikaze sheep, enraged cows, unhygienic pigs, and yes...Dickens.

At least his next randomly selected mob type can’t be worse...right?

This is the revised, edited, and novelized retelling of the popular Royal Road web serial Dungeon Core Online by Glyax.

Relaxed dungeon core

The story was a fun one. The comedy of the story is expressed well by Travis with enough jokes that being great to remember the past

Long love the dickens

I wasn't expecting this.

My God, a dungeon core story without the adventurers and core working together to thwart some evil plot?!? Needless to say I hate when the dungeon runners become aware of the cores intelligence and too many books follow that trend. I drop every dungeon core book the moment it happens because that's when the mystery and fun dies (looking at Divine Dungeon, Dinosaur Dungeon and Elemental Dungeon). Is it too much to ask for a chill story full of evolving monsters, funny puns and a leveling system? Apparently not because I got all of those things in this story.

I will be quite irritated if they learn who the dungeon cores are in later books because dungeon & runner coop always tends to be a wet blanket on the moods of most dungeon books for me. I can only hope this doesn't happen here.

Fun little listen

It was a decent book nothing hooked me in to much with the first book but I will say I’m definitely excited to listen to the second book and hear where the stories goes. Also loved some of the references! NI!

-On the outside looking in-

I really enjoy the easy pace of this book. as a hidden gem, litrpg fans will recognize several popular titles that are obviously put in the book. I can't wait to start the next book!

A lot to like if you like off-the-wall

Right off, Jonathan Smidt is a new author for me and I am pleased to say, one who I will be interested in listening to other titles authored by him.

While the MCs backstory is a bit weak, they are written in such a way to make them an interesting combination. The concept of a human dungeon core is not all that unique, however, the implementation of it's oddities and zany characteristics is highly entertaining. There is an ample amounts of 20th-21st century movie one-liner allusions, including a play, to sate most listeners movie awareness tastes. Regrettably, there also tends to be more stat recitals that acts io to interrupt the flow of the story, seemingly, for the need to acquire a higher word count novel. This is a not uncommon pitfall with the litRPG genre but a bit disappointing, nonetheless. Still, the story was very entertaining so I gave it 5by5 on the Overall and Performance rating and deducted one star to the Story rating for the overuse of stats.

Travis Baldree continues his excellent narrating performance.

should have ended at chapter 119

the best chapter to have ended book 1 should have been at the end of 119.

still a very good book and I'm waiting with baited breath for book 2 so I can support the writer.
