About this listen
As seen on the Today Show, The New York Times, People Magazine, Mind Body Green, and more
“If you would like to live a more fulfilled life, Samantha Boardman has exactly what you need. Everyday Vitality is one part memoir, one part wisdom from years of experience as a psychiatrist, and one part cutting edge scientific evidence. Brilliant, warm, and best of all - an actionable guide to a life well-lived." (Angela Duckworth, New York Times best-selling author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance)
Science-backed, research-driven, actionable strategies for countering stress and building your resilience
“A great deal of everyday wellbeing lies beyond what is happening inside a person’s head. Everyday opportunities and activities that foster growth and build positive resources are not 'icing on the cake,' but the active ingredients of everyday resilience.” (Samantha Boardman, Everyday Vitality)
In Everyday Vitality, psychiatrist Dr. Samantha Boardman shows listeners how to find strength within their stress and how to transform full days into more fulfilling days. Drawing from scientific research and her own clinical experience, she shares strategies for cultivating vitality - the positive feeling of aliveness and energy that lies at the core of well-being and at the heart of a good day.
You will discover how increased vitality boosts productivity, builds coping skills, and enhances your ability to manage negative emotions. Dr. Boardman demonstrates how to override counterproductive responses to the onslaught of daily hassles and to respond with flexibility and fortitude instead of fear and rumination. Rather than disengaging from the world while you "find yourself", she shows you how to boost your vitality by living well within the world.
As Dr. Boardman explains, the three main wellsprings of vitality are: meaningfully connecting with others; engaging in experiences that challenge you; and contributing to something beyond yourself. These activities foster resilience by boosting emotional stamina and generating uplifts - the counterparts to daily irritations and annoyances. Whether it is having a good conversation, doing a favor for someone, going for a walk, or reading an interesting article and then calling a friend to talk about it, commonplace experiences and micro-moments serve as the building blocks of everyday resilience. Everyday Vitality explains how to identify them in your life, develop them, and use them as a foundation on which to thrive.
Whether you are 20 or 80, Everyday Vitality will give you the tools you need to get the most out of each day and to live your life to the fullest.

How are you supposed to tell someone that they're not meeting expectations without crushing their spirit? Regular feedback, when delivered skillfully, can turn average performers into the hardest workers and stars into superstars. Yet many see it as an awkward chore: Recent studies have revealed 37 percent of managers dread giving feedback, and 65 percent of employees wish their managers gave more feedback. You make hundreds of decisions every day, from what to eat for breakfast to how you should invest, and not one of them could be made without the essential component of emotion. It has long been held that thinking and feeling are separate and opposing forces in our behavior. But as Leonard Mlodinow, the best-selling author of Subliminal, tells us, extraordinary advances in psychology and neuroscience have proven that emotions are as critical to our well-being as is rational thinking.

Empathy is in short supply. We struggle to understand people who aren’t like us, but find it easy to hate them. Studies show that we are less caring than we were even 30 years ago. In 2006, Barack Obama said that the United States was suffering from an “empathy deficit.” Since then, things seem to have only gotten worse. In this groundbreaking book, Jamil Zaki shares cutting-edge research, including experiments from his own lab, showing that empathy is not a fixed trait - something we’re born with or not - but rather a skill that can be strengthened through effort.

Joe De Sena has spent his life running toward challenge and discomfort. Why? Because how we react to challenging situations defines us and our families. The only tools we have as humans to survive the many peaks and valleys of a full life are preparedness, health, leadership, and most importantly, resilience. Why do so many parents struggle to finish things we start, delay gratification, and protect our health - and why do our kids continue to struggle in every facet of life? Because we haven’t showed them a path to resilience, and we haven’t fought for it ourselves.

Why is it so hard to change problem behavior - in our kids, our colleagues, and even ourselves? Conventional methods often backfire, creating a downward spiral of resentment and frustration, and a missed opportunity for growth. What if the thinking behind these old methods is wrong? What if people don’t misbehave because they want to, but because they lack the skills to do better? Or as renowned psychologist J. Stuart Ablon asks, what if changing problem behavior is a matter of skill, not will?

Critic reviews
"Boardman’s most successful argument is that society’s focus on self-care does more harm than good, as building community and finding supportive friends and family is crucial to well-being, while focusing too much on the self can increase rumination and, ultimately, depression.... By encouraging readers to 'override the urge to do what’s easy but empty,' Boardman’s helpful suggestions rise above the standard self-help fare." (Publishers Weekly)
“If you would like to live a more fulfilled life, Samantha Boardman has exactly what you need. Everyday Vitality is one part memoir, one part wisdom from years of experience as a psychiatrist, and one part cutting edge scientific evidence. Brilliant, warm, and best of all — an actionable guide to a life well-lived.” (Angela Duckworth, New York Times best-selling author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance)
“An insightful, uplifting read about how to bring more liveliness into our lives. Whereas most psychiatrists focus on alleviating mental illness, Samantha Boardman cares deeply about promoting mental health too. She combines an impressive command of science with deep empathy for her patients. If you’re depressed, burned out, or languishing, this book is brimming with practical ideas — and even if you’re flourishing, it’s full of valuable reminders for sustaining energy and wellbeing.” (Adam Grant, number one New York Times best-selling author of Think Again)

If not for narration, might have set this aside
Narrator was great and there were some good reminders and unique approaches... but that being said this was just overall not my cup of tea.
Many of the the suggestions waxed on about the value of socializing, which is certainly important, but it was uncomfortably clear this author is off on the extravert end of the spectrum and does not recognize (at least in this work) that many people in our wide world fall in the middle or are more introverted types. Meaning these numerous people are not always as motivated or recharged by constant interactions with others as she seems to be.
She also largely fails to point out that there are many meaningful ways a person can contribute to others and to society that don't ever have to involve personally tracking down specific individuals to help in person. Additionally, there never seemed to be any mention that when we do yearn to help others it is important to seek a person or organization who is actually receptive to our aid. It can be easy to forget that forcing help on people who don't want it or need it can quickly turn in to a negative experience for everybody.
If you are not always super social, maybe look elsewhere for a better and more balanced read. If you do enjoy being a deeply social sort then this is probably a book that will resonate with you.
