About this listen

A highly illuminating examination of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) and its insidiously traumatic impact on family members and partners. Packed with insight, compassion, and practical strategies for recovery, this is a must-listen for survivors and clinicians alike.

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) has a profoundly dehumanizing effect on those subject to its distortions, manipulations, and rage. The Narcissist in Your Life illuminates the emotionally annihilating experience of narcissistic abuse in families and relationships, acknowledges the complex emotional and physical trauma that results, and assists survivors with compassionate, practical advice on the path of recovery.

Whether you are just learning about NPD, managing a narcissistic parent or other family member, leaving a narcissistic relationship, or struggling with complex PTSD, you will find life-changing answers to these common questions:

  • What are the different forms of NPD?
  • Is my partner a narcissist?
  • Why do I keep attracting narcissistic personalities?
  • How can I help my kids?
  • What happens in a narcissistic family?
  • Why did my other parent go along with the abuse?
  • Why am I alienated from my siblings?
  • Why is it so hard to believe in myself and my future?
  • What is complex PTSD and do I have it?
  • What are the health problems associated with narcissistic abuse?

Journalist, survivor, and NPD trauma coach Julie L. Hall provides a comprehensive, up-to-date, affirming, and accessible guide that will not only help you understand narcissistic abuse trauma, but will help you overcome trauma cycles and move forward with healing.

Very informative

I liked that the author broke down the ways that narcissists abuse others, the causes of NPD and finally ways to heal and move beyond narcissistic abuse.

needed this

this is something I needed to read. I have gone though things I didn't know I did and projected narcissistic tendencies because of the abuse and neglect I've felt. Definitely a must read in terms of understanding narcissist and how to heal.

Lots of great information, one issue

This is a fantastic deep dive into narcissistic behavior and some tactics for recovery. I had multiple “ah ha” moments throughout where the behavior of certain people in my life was described exactly.
I do have one complaint which struck me fairly early in the book. Every time a pronoun is used, the author made a point of using “he or she”, or “his or her”. I’m all for being inclusive on this, and when I’m actually reading text which is written this way it’s not really an issue- it just registers as a placeholder for “one”. When listening to it however, and when the reader makes a point to articulate every part of it, it becomes extremely tedious to listen to. If this usage was something the author wanted to really make an issue of- which it appears she did- I would have much preferred a statement in the preface saying that pronouns would be alternated, that although it may technically be grammatically incorrect to use “they” in these cases, it makes it easier for the reader, or that instead of using gender pronouns the author would refer to “the victim” or “the target” etc.

The writer knew my husband and I

This book was an eye opener, enlightening and just put things into perspective for me. I realize now that I’m living with a narcissist, all the questions I use to ask him about why he would do certain things or act a certain way, the writer answered. I’m now at a point where I have to find myself and move in the right direction for the future, but it’s hard and I feel the rationalizing of irrational behavior creeping up on me again. So what I think I’ll do is listen to the book again and even buy a hard copy so I can see it when I can’t listen. Thank you!
