About this listen

A lone DeathEater has forsaken his clan. Leaving behind his previous life, Skharr starts building a future next to a dangerous forest in an unknown land. He tells himself it is better than taking gold for questionable reasons.

A lone old man travelling with a donkey offers him a choice: Continue this farm life, or trade him Skharr's just finished home and tilled land for a map.

A map that Skharr can use to live large for years...if he survives.

The old peddler watches him.

Realizing the intelligence, the polished actions of the huge man is but an act. A carefully orchestrated semblance of civility, and shudders.

Of all the Barbarian hordes, the rumor was to never ever upset a DeathEater.

And he had come here to unleash this particular DeathEater back into the world.

A story of a Barbarian looking ti get back home. Starts off as a farmer but then trades that in for a mission to get money faster. Skharr is very likeable and intelligent.

I like the character development and the story line. It was very enjoyable and I can't wait to listen to the next book.

nice fairytale

Enjoyable book. I am happy that the male MC finally acted like a strong character. Stoic, decisive, strong fighter, good decisions, treated others with respect if they deserve it, etc. To May books now make the characters mentality weak, unable to make or accept tough decisions, they whine a lot, try to adopt today's woke ideology, always feeling guilty for being who they are, etc. So this was refreshing.

Finally a male char with strong personality

Mostly you ride along enjoying his adventures as a passenger and listening his his thoughts on life and his efforts to help folks in a Barbarian way.

Kinda like an old Conan Book maybe.

I got it cause it seemed interesting enough. I was half expecting smut with just bloody gore. What I got was a good story from beginning to end with no real cliffhanger.

It’s not overly fantastical, actually realistic in some aspects. Our hero actually gets hurt, uses his head, and while not necessarily the good guy, he’s definitely not a villain.

I enjoyed the read, and can actually see myself getting the next book when I don’t actually know what I want but want something to listen to. I say that because I don’t need the next book to know the end of the first, so I can just pick up the second when I feel like it.

I suggest that you give it a chance, it will surprise you.

Surprisingly good listen

It was fun, Reminds me of Konan the Barbarian (spelled with a K because it's an obvious knockoff). Dialog was abysmal at times, story is simple and meandering in a really good way. Enjoyable overall.

So Mediocre I Had to leave a review

I just listened for my second time and it reads kind of like a video game narrative- collecting coins and potions like a warrior in and RPG. Probably wouldn't have paid for this if I'd known.

Is this LitRPG?

Not sure why this kept popping up in Litrpg for me but let me start by saying this is not remotely Litrpg.

That being said this story is a wonderful and simple fantasy story. It is very reminiscent of Conan which is I think the point. There are no great intellectual debates or mind bending twists. This is a big violent man being big and violent.

That is not to say the MC is dumb or doesn’t face problems. But his simple way of solving this is refreshing. Some stories want to paint their hero as a towering intellect who only uses violence because that is the right thing. This MC using violence because he must and he is good at it. He plays to his strengths and doesn’t pretend to be something he isn’t (kinda, no spoilers).

Simple and enjoyable
