About this listen

With the destruction of their home colony, Captain Ben Gibson and his Army Rangers have nowhere else to go. Six months after humanity’s victory in Earth’s first ever interstellar war, a group of soldiers are tasked with running a convoy refueling base in a rural part of the occupied enemy world. When they arrive, they find the local village has been abandoned in anticipation of their arrival by the panicked residents. Fearing a possible humanitarian crisis, the troops have to go into the alien wilderness to find them, reassure them that the humans are not the savages they’ve been taught they are and bring them back. And it won’t be easy. They will have to overcome language barriers, a fearful and hostile population, cross-cultural miscommunications, almost no support from the Army, and their own demons to succeed. With no idea where to start, it looks nearly impossible until the sudden arrival of a dirty, disheveled priestess who confesses to a host of war crimes and demands she be executed for them.

Excellent if you are a fan of military and first contact stories. I enjoyed this story and I am looking forward to the next. Narrator was excellent as usual from Daniel. Great military humor.

My kind of story

Really fun book honestly, doesn't get too bogged down in the war aspect to the detriment of character development which is a plus

Military humor and Cultural Misunderstandings

Enjoyable characters written in an entertaining way in an interesting context and setting. Mostly not an action combat story, but a character and culture story.

But when I do, it's usually for works like this. I loved this series so much I not only bought digital copies, I have a full set of the paperback books. but enough gushing, your here for a review of the first book.

The first book is a masterclass in world building, setting up the rules and guidelines the rest of the books will follow in an entertaining and engrossing manner. The world itself is a fun mix of the fantastical and some good old sci-fi. Earth's nations have breached the veil of it's own solar system and reached the stars, but interestingly the book takes place not during the race for colonization, but several years afterwards(but not decades or centuries after) which I found really interesting. I don't want to go into it much further because spoilers but long story short, colonies meet aliens, they are fox people, war ensues due to aliens, humans win.

Interestingly the meat of the series takes place after the war, so it's dealing with all of the details you don't really see afterwards, the rebuilding, the occupation, and the challenges of dealing with a group of people who are mistrusting, and cannot speak your language.

This leads into the characters, of which there are a lot of, but they all get sufficient screen time to establish who they are and what they're about, and are distinct enough to be very memorable. This only improves down the line in future books, but 'The Vixen War Bride' does a fantastic job setting up the foundations of these characters to really build them up more later on. Ramirez is a gem.

Anywho, Daniel Wisniewski does a wonderful job bringing the incredibly large cast of characters to life, and giving them their own unique voice. He is really good, and I'm interested to see what else he brings to the series in future instalments.

TLDR: Worth the credit, support the author.

I don't simp for books often...
