About this listen

With the destruction of their home colony, Captain Ben Gibson and his Army Rangers have nowhere else to go. Six months after humanity’s victory in Earth’s first ever interstellar war, a group of soldiers are tasked with running a convoy refueling base in a rural part of the occupied enemy world. When they arrive, they find the local village has been abandoned in anticipation of their arrival by the panicked residents. Fearing a possible humanitarian crisis, the troops have to go into the alien wilderness to find them, reassure them that the humans are not the savages they’ve been taught they are and bring them back. And it won’t be easy. They will have to overcome language barriers, a fearful and hostile population, cross-cultural miscommunications, almost no support from the Army, and their own demons to succeed. With no idea where to start, it looks nearly impossible until the sudden arrival of a dirty, disheveled priestess who confesses to a host of war crimes and demands she be executed for them.

This review is for the entire series not just book 1 and book 2 currently out. I have read the full series and can say confidently the writing, story and characters are solid and enjoyable. The lore of this future earth and fox alien war, along side the back ground world building is great and gives the story the extra depth that makes it just that much better. Why only 4 stars overall? You may ask yourself reading this. That is for some small flaws I'm not a big fan of. The biggest issue was inconsistent audio volume from the narrator. His voice acting and emotions are on point and amazing, yet the valley and peak between regular talking and parts that are said loud and with passion had me constantly adjusting my volume just to get my ear drums blown out when he got loud. The second ding is a personal sci-fi complaint. The Va'shen just aren't alien enough, they draw one to many parallels to humans and human culture and it kills my suspension of disbelief. The look like humans with fox ears and tails, okay fine. I could live with that if their culture was a straight rip off and mixing of East Asian culture. If they looked like bipedal fox people I could accept the culture rip off. Or if they looked like people with fox ears and tails but had such an extremely different culture they were very very alien and there was little parallels you could draw to one sub content or group of people, I could accept that. But both of those together kill it for me, okay rant over. Go buy the books and enjoy them. This is an awesome and interesting series, book 5 gets dark and a bit too real on how the military covers up misconduct if you are a high enough rank.

Finally on Audible!

Excellent if you are a fan of military and first contact stories. I enjoyed this story and I am looking forward to the next. Narrator was excellent as usual from Daniel. Great military humor.

My kind of story

Really fun book honestly, doesn't get too bogged down in the war aspect to the detriment of character development which is a plus

Military humor and Cultural Misunderstandings

I found this story to be an interesting and intriguing introduction to what is likely a complex story line. The disparate cultures and technology levels are novel as well.

Intriguing intro to story line

One of the top books in this genre with good story, pace, exciting plot, relatable characters, excellent narration and funny banter.

My minor was in history. I enjoyed the references. I also sort of speak several languages. I appreciate the difficulties involved.

Propositions for marriage do actually happen accidentally.

The military tactics are generally good. Some quibbles about things. Main are: Body armor stops knives and clubs.

No White Phosphorus. Not enough use of flashbangs, chemlights, CS, Thermite, and grenades in general. Nobody used a flying claymore mine, though it was noted they had the mines. That's where you slap the mine down on the side of the tree between you and the problem and go click click click.

No LAW rockets, AT4s, SMAW, man portable mortars, etc.

Beyond that, it's a wonderful series.

a wonderful book.
