About this listen

There was once a man born with a noble pedigree and peerless talent. His name was Xi Tianyi, and he was a man destined for immortal ascension.

This is not his story.

This is a story about Juedai Fenghua, Xi Tianyi's first clone. Due to unfortunate circumstances, she fell from the world of immortals to the mortal world. With no means to contact Tianyi, Fenghua claw her way back up to the immortal world. This is her journey...but why does it feel like she is not the protagonist?

Another home run from D. C. Haenlien!

This is an excellent spin-off from the Tianyi series! I loved every minute and very much hope for more of the clones adventures!

Not what I expected but worth it!

I was admittedly looking forward to another Xi Tianyi story so was at first bummed a bit. However, the more i listened i came to realize the hidden Jen this one was and came out satisfied with this little side story. Very well done!

light reading

I didn't realize this was a side story when I tried and it starts off well enough. this is a progression/wuxia style story which you should be able to tell from the title and cover. it has a lot of good elements but I would say about halfway through things get a little rushed, I would almost compare this to a big recap with moments spared to highlight big events.

if you read Cradle or Defiance of the fall this story would encompass 3+ books. I will have to check out the rest of the books and see how this fits in

Wow…! That was a surprise…!

I don’t know what I was expecting but that was definitely not it. I mean, I thought it was just going to be a fun little side series. Like a “filler episode.”
Ha! That was A LOT better than my expectations!
The storytelling and writing wasn’t so overdone with Eastern style dialogue and relationship structures as it was with the core series. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the main series and hope to see more of it! But this was just so refreshing! I also really liked our protagonist and the other characters! One character’s ending still broke my heart but it is kind of expected with Eastern style “might is right” dynamics.
Then you have the clone, Fengua, who got some nice development and got fleshed out more. She is definitely different from Tianyi now! I am really hoping that the author continues with Fengua’s story and that we get to see more of her in the next book. To have the story actually centered around her instead of being the “master of the protagonist!” The author’s plans at the end definitely sound interesting and I look forward to them. Though, I do hope we get to see Tianyi, his mother and “sister” first before a sequel for Fengua.

A couple of other things about this book. Like I said above, I enjoyed the flow and storytelling a lot more. I feel that the author found a better balance of having the typical eastern themes in it without it being overdone. Those who have read series like I Shall Seal the Heavens will probably agree with me.
Also, I REALLY enjoyed the narrators! I feel they did a tremendous job with drawing into the story and breathing life into each character and the general narrative! Their performance is one of the best I have heard! I quite literally couldn’t stop! I went through the audiobook in one sitting!
Now I REALLY need sleep so I’m going to stop here before I give too much away.

Thank you Royal Guard for the code to the book with only asking for me to leave this review!

Excellent listen

This story was a pleasant surprise, really well written and narrators do a fantastic job. It may seem short but there is a lot packed in there. Well worth a listen and a credit.

Great book

Really loved this book. The Japanese tropes are always a lot of fun. The world building is pretty good and the narrators have done a great job.
