helpful book

A lot of helpful information in here and encouraging thoughts. The cussing can be distracting, as it's unnecessary and trying a little too hard. Not as over the top as Unfuck Your Brain though--I had to abandon ship on that one. Overall, glad I listened to this.

Most useful Faith Harper title so far

I caught on to this author a while back and have listened to a number of her audiobooks by her.
With depression either underlying or co-existing with so many mental health issues, this audiobook is an excellent guidebook for a majority of people who have a mental health issue (whether or not it matches something in the latest DSM) even those who are “neurotypical”.

The author certainly has her “style”. While not everyone’s cup-of-tea, it makes the content more accessible and relatable. One minor quibble is that “jokes” repeat across books.

As to the reader, Ms Bennet is great. The listener never misses a word and the pace is just right even when some passages sound like an unlikely union of Freud and Andrew Dice Clay. I commend Ms Bennet for making a unique style her own without diluting it or trying to make it more “accessible” (aka PC). The really important stuff AND the expletives receive the same effort/talent.

Overall- very informative.

Lots of information which open one’s eye to what’s going on and prompt us to look further into the information being given to us by doctors and specialists.
Highly recommended.

Dr. Harper is always a gem to hear

Great basic information for those looking more into depression nd the "different" ways they present. I have years in the field and still learned new ways to think about and consider depression.

Not that great. Not a good first read for learning about depression

The narration is the absolute worst. It sounds like it was derived from text-to-speech software. The cussing isn’t a big deal IMO, the pearl-clutching over this fact is overblown. That said, the writing style here is weird. There’s a strain created by the author’s desire to be come across as relevant, authentic, and modern while also maintaining clinically accurate and clear discussion of these topics. The insertion of f bombs and slang terms, while sometimes acceptable, often appear in very random of places such as an otherwise clinical explanation of depression. This writing style is therefore jarring to me, and she ends up coming across as someone who’s trying to pander to someone two or three generations their junior.

It’s also worth noting that while she had me in the beginning but lost me when she began referring to naturopathy as something that was gaining popularity in clinical treatment because of the evidence-based science supporting it. FYI, that doesn’t exist. It’s sad to see that in 2023, people and even professionals still get duped into buying snake oil.

informative, but the potty mouth doesn't help

there are a lot of good advices and great information on the subject in the short book, but the potty mouth doesn't add anything. still, worth the time.
