Publisher's summary

A humanitarian mission into unfriendly stars. A training cruise under the watch of a fortified fleet base. The closing jaws of a trap years in the making.

It has been over a year since the UnArcana Worlds of the Protectorate of the Mage-King of Mars seceded, shattering the unity of the human race. The new Republic of Faith and Reason has raised new banners in defiance of the power of the Protectorate's Mage aristocracy.

Now, Hand Damien Montgomery commands a relief mission to a Republic world ravaged by famine. His humanitarian mission collides with a newborn military beginning to flex its muscles - and a newborn nation prepared to accept no violations of its sovereignty, regardless of their needs.

Elsewhere, disaster strikes the Nia Kriti Fleet Base as an earthquake shatters their only communication with the rest of the Protectorate. Officer-in-training Roslyn Chambers is in the middle of the recovery effort when she realizes Nia Kriti is under attack.

The Republic is done with peace. They are coming for the Protectorate - and they will see the fleets of Mars break!

A big surprise and another victory

Damien is recovering the use if his hands, but still remains one of the most powerful mage's alive. Even at partial strength he manages to push back the tide of the Republic. Due in part to the relationships he has formed through his past efforts. Another great story added to the Starship Mage series.

I really like this series

I know several folks have voiced mixed feelings about this book but I have to say I really enjoyed it. I am no writer or any kind of expert but I was able to connect with several of the characters and I very much enjoyed the ride.

Thank you Glynn

BRILLIANT! I LOVE THIS SERIES .

Awesome. Glynn Stewart is a fantastic writer. His Starship Mage series is sooo good. His protagonist, Damian Montgomery is a so dynamic, a good leader and a hero. I hope this new chapter in the series will continue to grow. Jeffrey Kafer performed excellently as always and brought the characters to live. I am waiting anxiously for the next book to come out soon.

Short but good

Another great book, but a bit short. Still more than worth a listen. Narrator is one of my favoritts.

He doesn’t sound like Joe Friday.

In the previous books, I’ve described the narrator as sounding like Joe Friday on the original Dragnet. I admit I was wrong.

He sounds like Rod Serling from the Twilight Zone. Listen to his tone and reading cadence. Yup, Rod Serling.

Otherwise the book is good. I like the action, the story stands up. Not the very best, but an absorbing book.

Not my favorite book

In my opinion, this book was a lot about Damien and his love life and his struggle to heal from his wounds from previous books. The battle scenes were minimal and more like thrown in just to add little action to this book. I was not pleased by this book at all.

I have really enjoyed the previous books and have actually read them prior to reading this one just to get caught back up. So disappointed in this book.

Looking forward to the next book and I hope Damian has recovered and gets on beating up with his magical powers.
