Publisher's summary

A new world. A malevolent disease. The Doctor is in.

Virgil's a veterinarian, a man dedicated to being a healer of animals. Despite the ups and downs of caring for sick and injured creatures, his career was more than a job. It was his calling. Then, his dedication was noticed, and the world around him faded, as he was yanked through the void.

The great world tree, Yggdrasil, needed a group that could work together to stop a threat that could end reality. The world tree summoned a team of five champions, into a world straight out of fantasy, and remade them into something more. Unfortunately, for Virgil, he was granted almost no skills that cause damage, and his body was shifted into a reviled Dark Elf. Now, hated by the locals and of little use to the others that can already heal themselves - as well as deal damage - Virgil was cast aside.

Abandoned and alone, Virgil will take on the threat to this world....No matter what ally gets in his way.

An amazing first book

It was a unique spin on the summoned to another world plus how the druids classes all worked the same but different too. The king tho? Hes just a dick and I struggled giving him any kind of sympathy for what his family went thru. Overall an amazing book and im already eagerly waiting for book 2.

This vet is an underDOG

I’m always a fan of underdog stories, but man, Virgil has a rough go of this! With virtually no damage potential, he gets abandoned by his fellow druids and has to go off into a new world and defeat the three demonic generals that threaten to take over the land.

He faces as much opposition from his fellow Earthlings who were portaled into the land with his as he does from monsters and demons. The dude can’t get a break!

Very enjoyable, clever MC, who finds ways to overcome apparently insurmountable problems.

Good book

The audience will enjoy where the writer attempts to take the listeners when hearing this story. There are some aspects of racism that are relevant to today’s society.

Good story, slightly clunky writing, typical hammy performance.

I would recommend this book to GameLit fans with a few caveats. The story is good, but as mentioned by other reviewers the racist world is a bit overdone and could have been more subtly and effectively written. The characters, while bombastic, are somewhat 2 dimensional. The writing mechanics are good enough to not be overly distracting but there are more than a few clunky parts.

Lastly, as is to be expected, Daniel Wisniewski whipped out his cheese gun and Wiskiewski’d all over the prose. If you like that sort of thing, then you’re golden. If you find his overly-dramatic, Shatneresque gravitas to be ridiculous and arbitrarily applied then you will have to struggle through along with the rest of us. While he detracts from the story as much as he usually does, I find that I can get used to it if I try not to pay attention to it, like when you’re driving past a pig farm.

Great start to a new series

Virgil is a veterinarian who suddenly found himself in another world as a dark elf. He is one of the Druid champions along with 4 other newly created elves. The problem is that dark elves are hated in this kingdom. To make matters worse, Virgil is the healing Druid. He finds that this means that he has no starting offensive spells and his weapon is little more than a healing booster. This could be difficult.

This is a very fun take on the isekai genre. I really enjoyed this book and the new characters. Grief is one of my favorite new characters! Virgil starts out very weak and hated. I know you can’t apply logic to prejudice, but the people know that he has not been a dark elf before he lands in this world. There are a few very OP items that he comes across, but it is understandable as a champion to save the world.

A bit basic but it was fine

I feel like it took too many tropes the same boring job so over and over again it was basic I guess

Good Grief!

really enjoyed the book and made even better by an amazing narration, yeah at this point the premise of the story is kinda cliche summon heroes to save the world but this one takes a different route than the normal stories with the mc being a healer and a dark elf which put him in a extreme disadvantage because no one likes them, what i didn't really buy is why even the other druids are complete dcks even gwen at the beginning towards the mc also extremely happy that his companion wasnt a sarcastic one but actually a helpful and funny one, can't wait for the next one!

Great isekai LITRPG!

Great start to a fun series. The MC is a veterinarian, which is a perspective I’ve never seen done before. The story is good, lots of twists and turns, and the stats are a good balance of crunchy and listenable.

Bonus points for the male/female narrators!

The next book comes out in March, if I remember correctly. Excited to see where the story goes!

Druid Champions reallly???

First off this book was well narrated. I enjoyed the voices of the different characters and thought it was very well done. But the characters man drive me insane. These hand selected champions and half of them are complete pos. the fact that this powerful entity would summon a hand picked group of people where half of them are terrible people. That just takes me out of the story. I am going to listen to the next book and I hope there is perhaps a reason these champions were selected.

6 out of 5 stars all around

Honestly, one of the best books I’ve read/listened to!! Great story! Main character felt relatable on multiple levels!
Truly a work of art!
Highly recommend this book! And I can’t wait for the rest of the series!
