About this listen

November, 2042

It's been a busy month for 32-year-old Jack Mitchel:

Three weeks ago, he died.

Two weeks ago, he founded the first Faction in the ultra-immersive, fantasy-based VRMMORPG, Viridian Gate Online.

A week and a half ago the world ended, destroyed by a cataclysmic asteroid.

Seven days ago, he conquered the Imperial city of Rowanheath, bringing all of Eldgard to the brink of war.

Though Jack's Faction, the Crimson Alliance, has a tenuous truce with tech genius and Imperial lord, Robert Osmark, Jack knows it can't last. Osmark is devious and power hungry, and it's only a matter of time before he sends his forces to wipe Jack and his underdog crew off the map for good.

If Jack hopes to survive another month inside of VGO, he must find a way to beat Osmark and his army of bloodthirsty thugs, and a new quest - the Path of the Jade Lord - may be just the ticket. But this quest will be far harder than anything Jack's faced before, pushing him to his mental, physical, and moral limits. And if Jack isn't careful, his quest to defeat Osmark and the Empire may end up turning him into the despot he's been fighting against.

Great Overall, I really wish he would stop whisper-yelling

Please just yell. Or talk-yell (yelling inflection, talking volume)

This really isn’t an issue for me normally. It just got on my nerves bad this time because of the sheer amount of yelled-in-the-book dialog

Great book

This is a great series, every book so far has been well worth it. After I'm done with this series I can't wait to see what else he has to offer.

I just want to facepalm

Overall, story and voicing is good. Worth a read.

HOWEVER, one major complaint I have is that the main character, Jack, goes above and beyond - truly well out of his way - to purposefully make horrible decisions.

Which are followed by heavy-handed plot armor that protects him from most or all of the negatives of making said stupidly bad decisions.

Example -
+On a quest where if he dies at all, he fails it & can never get it back.
+On a time limit.
+Major quest, too - big important to save everything he knows and holds dear - not just some pansy stuff.

+Given the option to meet the big bad face to face deep in his territory by himself
OR
+Ignore the big bad and finish the quest.

What does he do?
Decides to use a teleport scroll to meet his arch enemy... on the deep side of enemy territory... by himself... while on said time limit.

WHY?! Why would anyone in their right mind, with literally everything - EVERYTHING - to lose, do that?!

Another example would be when he is trying to peacefully discuss with someone who was clearly made out to be a good person, there is a major confusion and misunderstanding that he and his party suddenly start to attack them.

Instead of just, you know, SAYING LITERALLY ANYTHING TO STOP SHIT FROM GOING DOWN, he just stares at the enemy while they power up like a super saiyan. Then proceeds to massacre everyone without saying a single damn word. And is saved by plot armor again at the last second.

Ugh. Just.... ugh. Why.

Really enjoyed it

I really enjoyed the story and the characters. The only thing that kept it from being 5-stars for me, was a little bit of profanity. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great

The entire story is great and awsome but I feel like he isn’t taking proper advantage of Devil.
