Justin Miller jacked-up the plot in book 2 where World Seed moved from beta limited players and non-existential avatar death to worldwide Seed installations and players and people faced real death from monsters and other players. The MC still hasn't entered into any personal relationships, he has picked up what appears to be a platonic relationship with his female AI and his voluptuous evolved companions. There is still way too much cultivation grinding and his stats bloat is beginning to get annoying to fast-forward over. Also, there is too much "tell" versus "show" which often comes off a bit didactic in style and less interesting.

On the positive side, the story moved to a more interesting direction with the player-killer section being especially exciting to listen to and the tragic event with the 6yr old girl being the most poignant.

Neil Hellegers' performance is still a real plus to the storytelling of the series.

Much improved addition to series

This was much shorter over all and a bit slow, not anywhere near as substantial storyline.

much prefer the previous book.

A different twist but I like it.

New Rules has a great feel and a sly changeover in character additions.
While some stories fail to transition from character to character along with the protagonist or lead, Miller found an easy task in this by not focusing on anyone in the first book.
This is accomplished while still making sure to keep us knowing the world lives.

This time he gives us a group to gain acceptance of while keeping the scope from broadening to far.
However Miller does not forget to keep the knowledge of the living world in our sight.

The story is excellent and the characters fun and redeeming.

Hellegers did a great performance.

Looking forward to more.

It takes a bit of effort to get lost in the story instead of just lost. Pieces fall together in this second book of the series. It’s heavy on analysis and mana processes. Very cool story. The narrator takes some getting used to.
