About this listen

The new era of gamification and human-focused design optimizes for motivation and engagement over traditional function-focused design. Within the industry, studies on game mechanics and behavioral psychology have become proliferate. However, few people understand how to merge the two fields into experience designs that reliably increases business metrics and generates a return on investment. Gamification pioneer Yu-kai Chou takes the listener on a journey to learn his 12 years of obsessive research in creating the Octalysis Framework, and how to apply the framework to create engaging and successful experiences in their product, workplace, marketing, and personal lives.

very interesting content I will read second time

I found this book to be full of really interesting ideas told in a very easy to understand way. Although about halfway through it became a chore to finish because my motivations changed. I will most definitely return to this book and these ideas in the future.

Practicing What He Preaches

This book is exhaustive and a great resource on Gamification. It is obvious the author believes in the principles behind Gamification and demonstrates that to the reader by applying the principles in the book. At the end of every chapter he offers tasks that allows the user to apply what they should have learned. Nothing says 'sincerity' like eating your own cooking.

Great read for anyone wanting to know more about human motivation.

I really liked the stories and examples used in this book. I thought that the ideas about human motivation that the author put forward would benefit any product manager or designer.

Solid analytical framework

Solid conceptual framework that lets you easily apply gamification concepts to real world products. As an engineer who's moved to marketing i definitely appreciate that he's taken a topic that is hard to get people to take seriously and applied a rigid analytical framework on top of it. Going through the book I was able to easily take notes on the core principles and come up with a series of actions that I plan to investigate further for improving user engagement on a commercial product that is definitely not a game. I was impressed the concepts transition pretty easily from social media and games to general UX design.

I would ding it a star for how many times he says 'Octalysis', but I'll it back for being able to mathematically show that FarmVille was a crap game that simply plays to addictive tendencies.

A must read!! Don’t be fooled by the “gamification” verbiage. Guide to understanding The WHY of what makes us take action.

So glad I encountered by this audio. The author was an avid gamer who realized he didn’t receive real points in life when he was a gamer. So he dissected what motivated him to play games and now applies it to his life- I believe he’s a pioneer in understanding “lifestyle” gamification. Any executive, individual, and entrepreneur will learn alot about themselves, others, and maybe even their children! Thank you for even considering making this audio for us! Very valuable knowledge you can’t find anywhere else!

Eye opening! Fantastic info, visuals would help

Wish it had digitally documents accompanying the audio to make it easier to remember by visualizing a summary and charts. Hopefully I will source what I need online be or buy the physical book too. I'm a visual person listening to an audio book.

One of my top books on motivation

Great book, it helped clarify most of the motivations we experience in life and how to apply it in life, business, and game development. I highly recommend it to those who are trying to understand game mechanics, influence and motivation.
