About this listen

The 20th anniversary edition of the definitive classic on defeating obsessive-compulsive behavior, with all-new material from the author.

An estimated five million Americans suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and live diminished lives in which they are compelled to obsess about something or to repeat a similar task over and over. Traditionally OCD has been treated with Prozac or similar drugs. The problem with medication, aside from its cost, is that 30 percent of people treated don't respond to it, and when the pills stop, the symptoms invariably return.

In Brain Lock, Jeffrey M. Schwartz, MD, presents a simple four-step method for overcoming OCD that is so effective, it's now used in academic treatment centers throughout the world. Proven by brain-imaging tests to actually alter the brain's chemistry, this method doesn't rely on psychopharmaceuticals. Instead patients use cognitive self-therapy and behavior modification to develop new patterns of response to their obsessions. In essence they use the mind to fix the brain.

Using the real-life stories of actual patients, Brain Lock explains this revolutionary method and provides listeners with the inspiration and tools to free themselves from their psychic prisons and regain control of their lives.

OCD worst enemy!

I received a recommendation from a psychiatrist about the 4step method. My son suffers from severe OCD and anxiety and he finally decided to combat this illness. This is a great tool for the family and the individuals who suffer from OCD. It helped me to finally understand how my actions help or debilitate the compulsive tendencies of my son. I recommend this book to all who suffer from this horrible illness and to those taking care of a loved one suffering from OCD.

Great solution with real life examples

The book is great but the same ideas (4 steps)are repeated over and over again. I understand that this will get it engraved in patients minds, but it was overdone. The book provides relevant real examples of other people. The abbreviation “UCLA” was repeated too much, having in mind that this book is for OCD patients, seems that the repetition was meant to promote UCLA.

Tedious

I think this book could have been spoken in 1 hour. The repetition was tedious, but perhaps it was due to the audience that would purchase it. I was looking for something to shed light on living with someone with OCD and what I realized is that it is exactly as I thought. They believe their thoughts and have to act on them and that it is impossible for me to change those thoughts that can at sometimes be destructive to a relationship. Byron Katie has a process that is very effective at questioning ones thoughts that gets to it quickly if one is willing to inquire about the validity of their thoughts. Loving What Is helped me remove the responsibility for someone else's thoughts, beliefs and actions.

A superb read! The most useful and life changing book I’ve listened to!

As a medical practitioner I believe this book to be an encyclopedia for combating OCD... I’ve seen how OCD has ruined countless lives by causing undue anxiety and most importantly wasting the time of the individual... this awesome book shows how to combat this monster in a very detailed way...

It’s sad that some educated fools have asked for a professional reader to do the job... utter nonsense... Dr Schwartz does a good job in doing the reading that is crisp and clear...

The other complaints idiots make is that the book is too long... how long have you suffered with this terrible disease that you cannot give a few hours to help you combat the disease in a better way?... no pain no gain, so without being lazy one has to go thoroughly through this manual... yeah, it’s repetitive and if you are an OCD sufferer then I suppose it’s no big deal...

The four step approach and all examples sited serve a valuable purpose... don’t listen to the nay sayers and please listen to this book not once but many times and most importantly apply it to your life...

Remember that this is an encyclopedia and not a summary... READ AND APPLY... THANK YOU DR SCHWARTZ AND THANK YOU AUDIBLE...

Life Changing Book

This book changed my life. However.. someone else should narrate this as I felt like the author was yelling at me the entire time.

Recommend reading this instead!

This is a very good book.

This is a very good book. Has some principles that are slightly different from other standard, popular OCD books, but the principles are complementary (and not contradictory). Listen to this book AND the other standard, popular OCD books and you will have the tools to handle or at least reduce your OCD problem.

I like the fact that the author narrated his book. You can hear his passion and knowledge.

Very good book which I will use in my life.
