About this listen

Chaos is descending on the City of Ancients.

The Twilight Ascent is coming to a boil. The Eveningtide Asura's plans are nearing fruition, while powerful factions try to block his ascent. The survival of Twilight Harbor and its citizens depends on who's victorious. Zac finds himself tied to the asura's chariot, but that's only one of his problems.

Uona Noz'Valadir has stolen the Splinter of Oblivion, leaving Zac with a ticking time bomb of Creation in his body. A trap has been set within the City of Ancients, but Zac has no choice but to enter the belly of the beast.

A final battle awaits, and Zac is determined to show everyone the price of meddling with his path.

The whole book is basically a training montage

Don't get me wrong, I like the story. But the actual progression of the story takes up perhaps a third of the book. The rest, is Zac living in a giant fish and learning to hit things with his axe more good.

This part could have been condensed down to a third the length without losing any of the storyline or character development. While ultimately interesting, this book feels rather like the filler seasons of animes where the characters get sent to do some weird challenges disconnected from the main story so anime consumers can continue getting new content while the producers wait for the manga to catch up.

At least it does end at a reasonable point, and it is well written. And, the story is primed for another arc, with an actual epilogue to set up some teasers.

Love the series

My star rating is between 4 and 5.
Listen speed 1.25

This series has taken us down some great progression with a wonderful imagination. Love the characters and how they tie together. Book 9 has the remainder of book 8's plot to finish and then keeps the cultivation madness going for a bit too long in my opinion. We do get a sprinkling of other characters we know but this is mainly a cultivation grind for Zac. My knock is that this is essentially a web novel that may never end, while milking me for credits along the way. I'm addicted so I keep paying, but I have quit on a few other series once I feel like there isn't enough of the original plot still moving. I am not there yet, but books 8 and 9 test those boundaries.

Looking forward to 10

Book 9 felt like it was a place holder between 8 and 10 hoping 10 takes us on more adventure and interaction with the other characters!

Names, Names, More Names

The overarching story is interesting, but as with all the other books in this series there are names upon names upon names that make the plot difficult to follow. Names like, however they’re spelled, “Neeems Valadir and Orms B’Lore Val LaMentocilly and whatever… names that pop up once or twice in a book and then just pick up again in a different book like we’re supposed to just know who these people are. Or they never show up again at all but now we’re stuck wondering if we need to pay attention to them.

Also the narrator is good enough, but makes the main character sound constipated or like he’s trying to hold in a cough every time the character starts talking. It’s a little jarring.

Finally, if you like endless iterations of skill names and evolutions and cultivation branch trees… then you’ll like this but it’s hard to follow.

This may be better as a book you can continually flip around in for reference rather than an audiobook.

The best book in this series so far

I do seriously believe this is the best book in the series so far. We learn many mystery of the multiverse in this book including more info on the undead empire which has wide implications. Many seemed to complain on the lack of progression but i feel like these people didn't read the same book. First Zach finished his journey through twilight harbor within 8 hours of the book. Many seem to think the fish was filler but nothing in the multiverse is filler. His journey through this allowed him to work on his combat style and get advise from C grade beings and while readying for his D grade evolution. From how it ended Zach will reach D grade by the next book so I dont know how that's not progression. The character development is fantastic one having to constantly test their path is the bread and butter of this series. The newly revealed risk the Shard and Splinter is very important to how Zach will progress in the future. This book is what it truly means to travel the multiverse subverting fate and concurring impossible challenges.

This is still one of the best series

To be honest there are some slow spots were it's just a little repetitive but it's a perfect set up to explain how Zach is able to power up and learning how to do it the correct way. I'm hoping the next book is a reunion with some of the characters that are from the earlier parts of the series. All in this is an easy purchase.

Really good!

Okay glad that the whole blood mistress thing was resolved quickly instead of just being dragged on and on but i do have to say that the part of the prison arc kinda got boring for me

Honestly, One of the best books in the series.

The book roughly breaks itself out into three parts and the middle one is honestly a bit dull but the climactic resolution to the twilight ocean arc and the wrap up of the new arc make it worth it.

An Unexpected Reprieve

The blurb was definitely a bit deceiving. Vague spoiler: this isn’t some bombastic book long climax to the Twilight Harbor events.

I think so long as you’re not expecting what the description seems to be promising the book is good. It takes a small step back and is a good break in tone. I feel that stories like this require some breaks because events have to take place over years and eventually decades.
