About this listen
In Surrounded by Setbacks, internationally best-selling author Thomas Erikson turns his attention to a universal problem: what to do when things go wrong. Too often it seems like our dreams and ambitions - whether it’s finally getting that corner office, lacing up your running shoes again, or building a flourishing relationship with your partner - are derailed by one roadblock or another. So, how do we learn to take setbacks in stride and still achieve our goals?
In Surrounded by Setbacks, Erikson answers that question. Using simple, actionable steps, Erikson helps listeners identify the “why” behind their goal, create a concrete plan toward achieving it, and - most importantly - avoid many of the most common pitfalls that derail us when we attempt something new. The simple four-color behavior system that made Surrounded by Idiots revolutionary now helps listeners reflect on how they respond to adversity, giving them the self-awareness to negotiate the inevitable obstacles of life with confidence.

True leadership isn't a matter of having a certain job or title. In fact, being chosen for a position is only the first of the five levels every effective leader achieves. To become more than "the boss" people follow only because they are required to, you have to master the ability to invest in people and inspire them. To grow further in your role, you must achieve results and build a team that produces. You need to help people to develop their skills to become leaders in their own right.

Why can humans alone invent? In The Pattern Seekers, Cambridge University psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen makes a case that autism is as crucial to our creative and cultural history as the mastery of fire. Indeed, Baron-Cohen argues that autistic people have played a key role in human progress for 70,000 years, from the first tools to the digital revolution. How? Because the same genes that cause autism enable the pattern seeking that is essential to our species' inventiveness.

Achievement often comes at a cost. Angst, restlessness, frayed relationships, exhaustion, and even substance abuse can be the unwanted side effects of an obsession with outward performance. While the high of occasional wins can keep you going for a while, playing into the always-on, never enough hustle culture ultimately takes a serious toll.

Since birth, you were spoon-fed ideas, beliefs, and routines that program you into the same default path as everyone else. This leads to the same quality of life as everyone else. It’s no wonder why most people feel anxious, overwhelmed, and have a cloud of meaninglessness hovering over their heads at all times. Focus is the cure.

Excellent

I was expecting way more almost exclusively follow up with regard to communication style and color reference. This author while seeming well intended fails to understand the potential family family setbacks from caring for challenged children. I gad yo close it when he got on with his get up amd just do it malarkey.
Loved Surrounded by Idiots

Terrible narration
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
Surrounded by Setbacks is your stereotypical Self-help "pull yourself up by your bootstraps because you are trash and everything wrong in your life is your fault" content that you will get from any other book in this genre.
I dove into this series to improve my communication, not receive pseudo-inspiration. It was disappointing and I hope the rest of the series manages to bounce back and produce material that is actually practical.
The low point in the series (so far)
