Publisher's summary

Heart disease is the #1 killer. However, traditional heart disease protocols - with their emphasis on lowering cholesterol - have it all wrong. Emerging science is showing that cholesterol levels are a poor predictor of heart disease and that standard prescriptions for lowering it, such as ineffective low-fat/high-carb diets and serious, side-effect-causing statin drugs, obscure the real causes of heart disease. Even doctors at leading institutions have been misled for years based on creative reporting of research results from pharmaceutical companies intent on supporting the $31-billion-a-year cholesterol-lowering drug industry.

The Great Cholesterol Myth reveals the real culprits of heart disease, including:

  • Inflammation
  • Fibrinogen
  • Triglycerides
  • Homocysteine
  • Belly fat
  • Triglyceride to HCL ratios
  • High glycemic level

Bestselling health authors Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., and Stephen Sinatra, M.D. give listeners a four-part strategy based on the latest studies and clinical findings for effectively preventing, managing, and reversing heart disease, focusing on diet, exercise, supplements, and stress and anger management.

Get proven, evidence-based strategies from the experts with The Great Cholesterol Myth.

Critic reviews

"Anyone skeptical of the notion that there is more to heart disease than 'cut your fat, take a statin drug' would be well served by [listening to] this book." (William Davis, M.D.)

Review from a vegan

I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would. I appreciate the authors holistic view on heart-health versus only focusing on diet. I eat a completely plant based diet, so many of the authors stated reasons for eating animals I obviously don’t agree with. One example would be their recommendation to eat omega 3 fatty acids from wild caught fish. These can also easily be found in plants like chia seeds, leafy greens and flax seeds instead of eating wild caught fish which they never mention in this book.

There is a lot of confusion about what causes heart disease. This books says refined sugar, stress and not fat while many studies and other books point to fat. Eating a whole food plant based diet alleviates the need to worry about these factors(except stress) because this way of eating naturally includes minimum-to-moderate amounts of both fat and refined sugar.

The last thing I’ll say is that I appreciate the authors clarity on what carbs are bad for us instead of demonizing all carbs as some people tend to do. They make it clear that fruit, beans, vegetables etc should be a large part of your diet (especially vegetables) and to stay clear of processed foods and refined sugar.

must listen to anyone taking statin drugs

open my eyes to truths hidden in plain view. I don't want to give up the story, but statins are not the answer for aliments caused by sugar. if you or someone you love suffer from high cholesterol, triglycerides or LDL, I suggest you listen/read this book as an additional medical reference.

eye opening,

Fantastic ! Made me not afraid of saturated fat, made me more afraid of carbs. Blows apart the conventional wisdom about heart disease and heart health.

Life saving and informative.

An easy to understand book that I did not want to stop listening to. Keep a note book and pen near by because you will want to write down some of things you hear. You might want to buy the hard copy to give to your doctor to read.

I've recommended this to people I love...

...who have been led down the wrong path by the medical establishment and big pharma. It's a great partner to "Why We Get Fat."

Unexpectingly Brilliant

Any additional comments?

I have to say, this was not all what I was expecting. I thought that this book would be boring. However, the writers, both of them ad the narrator made the book a very enjoyable read. The facts are interesting and it was written in a way that I;m sure everyone would understand without any problem. The theories mentioned in this book is well supported and well explained. The various personal stories of the authors also goes a great way making the book enjoyable.

The narrator does a fabulous job in reading too. He use an easy pace and a varying tone that helps to engage the reader.

Try it, it may be better than you think.
