About this listen

New York Times best seller

Being a lazy genius isn't about doing more or doing less. It’s about doing what matters to you.

"I could not be more excited about this book." (Jenna Fischer, actor and cohost of the Office Ladies podcast)

The chorus of "shoulds" is loud. You should enjoy the moment, dream big, have it all, get up before the sun, track your water consumption, go on date nights, and be the best. Or maybe you should ignore what people think, live on dry shampoo, be a negligent PTA mom, have a dirty house, and claim your hot mess like a badge of honor.

It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed by the mixed messages of what it means to live well.

Kendra Adachi, the creator of the Lazy Genius movement, invites you to live well by your own definition and equips you to be a genius about what matters and lazy about what doesn’t. Everything from your morning routine to napping without guilt falls into place with Kendra’s 13 Lazy Genius principles, including:

  • Decide once
  • Start small
  • Ask the magic question
  • Go in the right order
  • Schedule rest

Discover a better way to approach your relationships, work, and piles of mail. Be who you are without the complication of everyone else’s "shoulds". Do what matters, skip the rest, and be a person again.

Critic reviews

“As a longtime fan of The Lazy Genius Podcast, I could not be more excited about this book. Kendra has a gift for asking questions that helps you prioritize the parts of your life that really matter and let go of the parts that don’t. She doesn’t preach or pressure; she inquires and encourages. As she admits, it’s not easy to manage the seemingly constant demands of running a house, planning meals, hosting relatives, and creating and maintaining holiday traditions, all while finding time for your own work and self-care. But Kendra makes it all a lot easier!” (Jenna Fischer, actor, author of The Actor’s Life, and cohost of the Office Ladies podcast)

“Kendra has a heart for infusing the mundane and practical with a profound sacredness. Frankly, it’s infuriating how she manages to be effortlessly instructional, inspirational, and hilarious all at the same time, but the world is such a better place for it. I’ve never been more thankful for someone’s voice.” (Knox McCoy, author of All Things Reconsidered)

“If you’ve been taught that nothing good comes from being lazy, get ready to let Kendra change your mind and life forever. Spoiler: laziness is the powerful tool that frees you to be a genius where it really matters. I wish I had this eye-opening book 20 years ago.” (Myquillyn Smith, Wall Street Journal best-selling author of Cozy Minimalist Home)

What a breath of fresh air!

I loved every second of this life-giving and practical life guide that paints your individual goals as attainable and designed. It was like a breath of fresh air I so desperately needed every time I picked up the book and I’m so thankful for these words and the life they gave my soul.

Great book!

This book just reinforced much of what I already do but gave me some great new ideas. Kendra does an excellent job of getting the point across with relative real life examples.

A perfect listen!

Friends, please listen and/or read this book! It is encouraging in ways I didn’t know that I needed to be encouraged! It is real in a way that is so incredibly relatable that it will feel like Kendra knows you personally. She slowly eases you into FINALLY realizing that WE ARE ENOUGH! We do not need to have a Pinterest home to have company and we do not need magazine-worthy dinners to enjoy a meal. Kendra is such a breathe of fresh air in a time that feels so heavy and uncertain. Thank you, Kendra for your beautiful words of wisdom and grace!

I love the way Kendra speaks (and writes). Thank you Kendra for teaching me the principal of “start small”. I’ve applied it to my life in so many ways but I wanted to share my top 2.
I’m a third grade teacher and never feel like I can give anything my all. I give everyone a little part of me and at the end of the day, I have nothing left. When it came to wanting to exercise before work, I’d try one day, get overwhelmed by all of the circuits, and stop for months. By starting small, I now just do one circuit of each exercise and I stop for the morning. Will I be as ripped as someone who does 5? No. But I feel better that I have been consistently moving every morning.

My other way I decided to start small is with teaching. There are SO many resources out there that I would become so overwhelmed and then choose to just do my own thing. Now, I chose one resource and will utilize that the remainder of the year until I feel comfortable using a new one. Seems like common knowledge but hearing Kendra offer this advice, and as some ways, give me permission to start small, my life is already changing. This book is a must read.

Thank you for these principles!

Thank you, Kendra for writing a book about me. About my friends. About my kids friends. It’s about all of us. It completely encapsulates all of the things that we tend to let get in our way of having the life that we want. The thirteen principles are perfect. Thank you for breaking it down and making it not so daunting. I listened to the audiobook but I’m getting the hardback so that I can take notes and refer back to it again and again. Thank you for teaching me how to be a Lazy Genius.
