About this listen

A definitive guide to understanding those on the autism spectrum so you can make meaningful connections.

Do you work with people who are on the autism spectrum, and you want to find ways to connect with them? Are you worried that your lack of understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is causing issues in relationships with your friends, family, or coworkers? Do you suspect someone you are close to may have ASD and you want to better understand what they deal with on a daily basis? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you have come to the right place. By understanding the neurodivergent or atypical brain and finding ways to better support those with autism, we can begin to change this.

This audiobook will tell you how to do just that. In this guide, you will discover:

  • A look at neurotypical and neurodivergent brains, and how it is important to understand “normal” as a subjective term
  • What ableism is, and why negative attitudes toward ASD cause those on the spectrum to feel like they need to mask or camouflage their true selves
  • A look at the eight senses (yes, eight!) and how the neurodiverse brain may deal with sensory overload on a regular basis
  • Communication difficulties of those with ASD and strategies for communicating thoughtfully and effectively with atypical individuals
  • The struggles of living in a neurotypical world when you have a neurodivergent brain–and the mental health struggles this can cause
  • Why people on the spectrum sometimes get stuck in black-and-white thinking, and how to break free of the cognitive distortions that cause this way of thinking
  • Common executive functioning issues with ASD (like time management and impulsivity), and proven ways to help in these areas
  • The steps to getting a diagnosis if you think you may be on the spectrum
  • And much more.

Living with autism doesn’t mean living away from society. Take the first steps in understanding adult autism today.

Great Resource!

I, like most, have several people in my life with Autism whom I would like to better understand and if possible, help any way I can. This book was a great help to me because it helped me wrap MY brain around the complexities of Autism. Maxine Kelley breaks down the actual differences in the brain with Autism vs an neurotypical brain. She dives into how a neurotypical person's attitude may affect the person with Autism. So helpful! Communication is KEY.

I was surprised to find out about the 8th sense! The chapter on attaining a diagnosis if you suspect you need one was a great addition. Highly recommend for those with anyone with Autism or suspected Autism in their life.

A book to understand my friend

I had a personal connection to Chapter 5, "Mental Health Matters," as it addresses the significant impact of mental health on autistic individuals. As someone who has a close friend on the autism spectrum, I could relate to the struggles they've faced with mental health challenges. The book provides valuable information about recognizing and addressing these issues, emphasizing the need for empathy and support. The narration was also clear and engaging.

A guide to help us support them

This book begins by challenging the notion of normal and I could not appreciate that more. Both my kids are neurodivergent and one has autism. There are so many levels to autism so it is very difficult to classify all autistic kids or adults as acting one way or another. Whether someone is neurodivergent or neurotypical, there is no such things as normal.

The book provides strategies for effective communication and breaking free from thinking things are black and white and instead focuses on trying to create a more inclusive society. Everyone has struggles, some are more easily seen and some are hidden away behind closed doors. One of the most important things the book shares is patience. Learning how to be patient. Just because it does not seem like a big deal to you, it may be a big deal to them. Sensory overload is real and I see it consistently with my kids. We have learned how to recognize when it becomes to much, and we have had to devise strategies if it has gone too far and we need to de-escalate.

Anyone who struggles who never be made to feel that that they are different and that they are a problem. This book is written with compassion, and it is clear that this author is ready to help be a voice for those that struggle to have their own voice heard.

A Compass in Navigating the Spectrum

Upon diving into the “Adult Autism Support Guide”, I was immediately met with a cascade of insights that felt both profound yet accessible. The author has a knack for unraveling the complex tapestry of ASD, providing a roadmap for fostering genuine connections with neurodivergent individuals. This isn’t just a manual, but a heartfelt companion for those of us threading the delicate path of relationships strained by neurological misunderstandings.

The section on dismantling ableism touched a nerve, challenging yet guiding me to reevaluate my perceptions. The explanations surrounding the eight senses and their role in sensory overload were eye-opening, revealing a layer of daily struggle and triumph I was oblivious to.

The narrator’s empathetic tone was the cherry on top, making this a 5-star-worthy listen for anyone looking to deepen their understanding and relationships with the neurodivergent community.

Adult Autism

This audiobook is helpful for anyone trying to understand how neurotypical and neurodivergent minds differ, especially those who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This audiobook shines as a source of wisdom and understanding in a society where empathy and understanding are essential.
Beginning with a discussion of how subjective the term "normal" is, the audiobook emphasizes the value of accepting neurodiversity. It addresses the subject of ableism, shedding light on how negative views can cause people with autism to hide their genuine selves. Well done
