Publisher's summary

Knowledge is power. Knowledge is safety. Knowledge is happiness. But only if you can act on it....

In spite of his best efforts, 16-year-old Taryn is an outcast. No one in the city will sully themselves by associating with a Clanless, and without someone to jump-start his Eco core, he’s unable to fulfill his dream of walking the path of a cultivator. However, his life is turned upside down when he finds a journal belonging to an ancient immortal known only as “the Mourner".

The journal was enchanted to pass along the memories and knowledge of the old cultivator to their successor. Taryn is ecstatic, as he suddenly has an abundance of knowledge at his fingertips. Unfortunately, he’s unable to make use of that knowledge without Eco. And the Mourner's spirit has begun showing Taryn visions of a possible future—one where his home is destroyed, and the only family he knows dies before his eyes.

There’s only one way to prevent this future from coming to pass. The journey will either force him to surpass those who once mistreated him or die, and not even the Mourner has the knowledge of which outcome it will be.

From Kenneth Arant, best-selling author of the Snake’s Life series, comes a brand-new cultivation adventure perfect for fans of xanxia, demon beasts, and mystic martial arts of all types.

Great story

This book was great let’s start off with that! It’s was stalling in the beginning but as you kept at it really gets going! The world building draws you in and makes you wish for more and more to understand and this world! If your a cultivator book follower than this book is for you. Not to mention if you love old school kung fu movies then this is the book for you!

Very cool concept

This is a very unique world with a cool cultivation system. The book started off slowly to me. I got to the point that our MC would not even be able to cultivate but they cross that hurdle about halfway through the book. Things really pick up at that point. Great finish. Evil cliffhanger. I really want to see where things go next. The narrator did a great job!

Angst on steroids

Horrible world building, MC worthless (pissed his pants twice in the first dozen chapters), narrator uses a high pitched whine for female characters. Story is a mishmash of incongruous events. Don’t waste your time and money.

for "modern" audiences.

the author was able to make me feel something and that something was bored maybe slightly irritated reminding me of the real reasons why IP's like marvel have gone to shit, and its not genre fatigue its the ideology they are pushing. deffinitly going to return.
