About this listen

Bleak dreams are made of this...

The battle of Hammon's Bog is over. The town is free, the undead destroyed, the Witches slain, and the surviving villagers are picking up the remains of their lives. Despite his scars and constant nightmares, Brin is doing his best to move on from the battle against the undead. He's looking to the future, but his past might not be done with him yet.

Soon Brin will learn that not every Witch who tormented him is gone for good, and he won't be able to depend on Hogg and Lumina to protect him in places they cannot reach. He'll need to learn some new tricks, earn some new Skills, and stretch the limits of his Illusionist Class if he wants to survive.

I was hoping to like this series, but I ended up loving it. Incredibly good world building, characters, and story. Each book maintains the same level of excellence.

Give it a listen. You won’t regret it.

Standout series

Really enjoyed this one, sometime it gets a little dark, but love the main character and it’s a unique approach to this genre, can’t wait to see what happens next!!

Excellent series!!!

First 25 chapters were about glass… I think. The rest were some form of tutorial on how Authority works… I think. Oh, and mom’s an abuser of all things… Not that mom… The other one.

The first 2 books of the series were far more intriguing, entertaining, and engaging than this latest installment, at least in my opinion. I don’t mind ‘setup’ or ‘filler’ books where there is a lull in the action while foundational material is shored up…usually. This time around I just couldn’t relate, enjoy, or connect with any characters outside of 3 members of the party that received the quest to rescue the MC back in Book 1 (gooooooo Hogg)… and Paris. We did get out of the starting city though… eventually. Simply put, it is an excruciating slog. I’m also finding it extremely difficult to give 2 kookoobaroo (butchered spelling) snacks about The Rogue or The Weaver. Both have gone from misunderstood to just plain annoying and obnoxious.

Hoping that the next book isn’t as discombobulated as this one… or as this review. I’m not giving up yet… with a final ellipsis…. for good measure.

A lot of ‘words’ for so little progress

When Brin and company are gaining skills, levels, and adventuring and exploring the world or learning crafts, I'm all in. When I have to endure numerous investigations that usually only unveil nothing or not enough of the mystery for a clever reader to figure it out, I am forced to accept the poor mystery writing is because they are not writing a mystery.

There's a place for investigation and some withheld information in the litrpg genre, but it's like eating vegetables with a steak. Some broccoli and a side salad are fine. Not everyone wants them, but for many, that improves the meal. This book made me feel like I had to eat an entire head of broccoli before I got steak. The previous book had a lot of this too so I may stop reading if book 4 keeps loading up heavy on mystery. Just tell me a good story. Withheld information is so dull - especially when I guessed what was happening the moment the correlation with Lumina's injury was mentioned. The caravan traitor has me stumped still, but it is not a vital mystery and I suspect we would know what happened the had the narrative included the bandit's interrogation - which Hogg heard - so he likely holds a key to the mystery that will solve it once something unfortunate happens.

Here's hoping book 4 will be just litrpg with no mysteries that last longer than a single investigation.

Love the series, bored by mystery

Book had a start middle end. great wrap up, story felt like it progressed. Too often books just feel like filler, but this gave a great story but still set the scene for what's to come to you can be excited for the next book. This whole series is great and I highly recommend all the books. Great work.

Fantastic. Well written complete story.

This series is so good and the narrator is awesome. I’m super bummed there isn’t another one yet. Looking forward to book 4!

amazing story

The book is good of course, well placed and engaging. Some hints and still good even if you figure it out.

Now that aside the narrator made this book come to life. This will make other books seem flat from how good this one is.
Really hope to hear more from them. If debating reading or listening, I'd say listen.

Outstanding narration

Bog Standard Isekai's third book "Nightmares" is a strong entry into this unique fantasy series.
The writing continues to shine with poetic brilliance and well-balanced, measured classical development. No frustrating cliff-hangers or two-bit plot armor. All major characters continue to be developed along with an understanding of the world and magical system.
Jonathan McClain turns in another performance of the highest caliber, probably one of the best in the business for single-narrator audiobook performances with his depth of tonal and vocal range and unusual ability to literally breath passionate, unique life into different characters and command the pace of the storytelling, like a good captain should.
I highly recommend this series and this book and look forward to the next.
