About this listen

Callum had seen things all his life. There are monsters and beasts living among people, but he learned very early not to admit such things, not if he didn’t want people to think him crazy.

It turns out that the supernatural is real, but at 30, Callum has no desire to be part of that secret. Not that he has a choice when it turns out he is a mage, albeit one that hasn’t cast any spells in all his life. There are requirements, duties, and education that the powers that be insist he be subject to.

To hell with that.

An urban fantasy and magical realism story with a healthy dash of genre subversion.

highly enjoyable

honestly I wasn't expecting anything brilliant by this author IC as I've never read or listened to their work but this book was incredibly fun to listen to. my only gripes with it are about the narrator Jeremy Frazier. for the vast majority of the book he did a wonderful job but when the fey ditective was speaking the voice Jeremy used for her was rather annoying and difficult to listen to. other than that this audio book is great. 8.2/10

Highly entertaining first book

I was meh on this story when reading the synopsis. It was on sale so I grabbed it.

So glad I did. It was entertaining the whole way through. I'm 100% going to get the second book in the series.

There's action, suspense, mystery, magic, werecreatures, vampires, mages, fae and others I'm sure I forgot to include.

Give it a go.

Great voice actor!

Interesting concept of magic and how it works. I'm always for a secret society of magic users so this "late bloomer" mage has potential. I'm interested to see where it goes in the next book. The standout for me was the narrator who totally took me away with his different character choices and acting ability the narration of all of the explanations of what and how magic was used was interesting due to his inflection and reading. I will read more of his performances!

An Excellent Urban-Fantasy, Progression Novel.

The writing and story were excellent. My only complaint was the narrator. The narrator had two problems.
1.) They read incredibly slow. However, this is easily overcome by speeding it up in the app; however, the length is somewhat artificially inflated due to the slow reading speed.
2.) Nearly every female character sounded exactly the same, and most of the male characters were also indistinguishable.

Outside of those minor complaints, I highly recommend this book to urban-fantasy or progression novel enthusiasts.

Don't listen to the low reviews

Let me start by saying ignore the 1 and 2 star reviews. I read dozens of the reviews on this site before buying this book and they really had me worried, but the sample had caught my attention and i figured if it really sucked i could always return it for a refund on my credit. I'm glad i took the chance because this book was gold.

It's obvious to me that most of the people who shit balled this book either weren't paying attention or didn't actually listen to enough of it to give it a chance because if you really follow through, everything makes sense. Put yourself in the shoes of the protaganist and i think any decent person would end up acting the same way. the only surprise at all is that he's as successful as he is, and honestly most of that's down to luck and hard work and the fact that he's taking things seriously. He keeps his head when shit goes down and as a result he's able to get by, sometimes by the skin of his teeth.

I can't wait to listen to the second book, which i'm off to do right now.

Fun but light

The story and history is light on details and reasoning but it fun.

Example they claim space mages are porters and non combat......

REALLY? So I dont know teleporting a guy say 5 miles into the air seems pretty combat to me. Or you throw a fireball at a space mage and he just opens a portal to right behind the thrower so they get hit with their own fireball. Or ya know open a portal behind their head and fire a gun or stab a sword.

Space mages seem pretty OP for combat. The book though just seems light think of space mages for normal teleporting and spatial item stuff.
