About this listen

An army of monsters couldn't stop the War Incarnate, Sam Hunter. But a floating city of cultists just might.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Sam must outrun the Black City full of cultists hellbent on avenging their fallen god while avoiding the grisly fate of his newly claimed skyshard falling into the Maelstrom at the heart of the first layer.

Sam and Raiko will need to look within for power. The Academy's professors, in repayment for their salvation, offer unique paths of progression: smithing, alchemy, enchanting, building, and so much more. Together, they strive to build a foundation that lasts the ages, fueled by treasures and enemies below.

Racing against the clock, Sam needs not only to empower himself but his new skyshard as well to have any hope of staying ahead of the Black City or surviving the rending black hole of the Maelstrom.

Lots of potential weighed down by horrible pacing

Unfortunately this series seems to be going on the same direction as the Beastborn series... no where. Each book has been a step down, with almost nothing actually happening in this one. Book 1 was great: included a solid setup, fight for ileguard, intro to the system, finding their way as a group and then getting betrayed, the dungeon and finding a god, got to the sky shard, fought demons and killed a god. Book 2 at least expanded the sky shard and added the academy. Book 3? I guess they leveled up a bit from crafting and discussed some things? The entire book seemed filler and setup which could have easily been condensed into the first 3-4 hours of a real book with actual progress. 3rd book and we're still in the first layer and have reconnected with any of the friends?? Feels like there should be so many more interesting things they should be tackling by book 3 like kingdom building and climbing layers. I actually love slice of life but we need more to actually happen in that life

Callum's books have all seemed to follow the same pattern... He's created what might be the most interesting universe currently active in the genre - and then avoids doing anything significant with it. We just get books mired in painful minutia, inner monologues, repeated details and extended stat explanations. I'm hoping this really is just a needed set-up book and we see things change going forward. I'll get the next one but if it's anything like this it'll be my last.

completely spinning wheels

there was little to no story progress, it was enjoyable and luke Daniels is awsome as always but at this slow of a pace I don't know how long I'll stick with the series.

Good and Bad

Loved the overall tone but hated how much time was spent on stats in the overall mostly anti climactic

Not a fan of this one

I don't like books that are used as buildup for the next book. It is ruff when nothing really happens.

Great narration !

The first 2 books had me wanting more and couldn’t wait for this book to come out. But it felt like in this book the story just kept dragging on. The content was entertaining but it felt like the story only moved forward by a slight shuffle but did not take a step forward. It flushed out some development of characters and set up the stage for new characters to come to the stage but the story did not advance.
