Publisher's summary

“As the Knight of The Last Horizon, I challenge you.”

The Last Horizon has already sown new legends across the galaxy, tales of monsters defeated and worlds saved. For better and for worse, their reputation is spreading.

Their enemies have taken notice.

On Karosha, the Perfected gather fleets crewed by inhumanly flawless soldiers. In the Galactic Union, the secretive organization known as Solstice pulls strings in the shadows. And in the depths of Dark Space, after years of silence, the ravenous D’Niss begin to stir.

Raion Raithe, Knight of The Last Horizon, sees these threats as a chance to redeem himself. He will stand against the danger, and he will stand strong, no matter what it costs.

His friends are counting on him.

The Knight is Book Three in a planned six-book series.

Another one, he does it again.

If you haven’t decided to jump on the Gnome bandwagon by now I won’t be able to convince you. This series is just getting better and better. Not sure it’s up to Cradle just yet but it’s certainly carving out a name for itself. Great work. Absolutely can’t wait for the next one.

Friendship!

Great as always. Audible makes you leave reviews with words now. You can’t just leave stars. Dumb.

Not bad, so long as you pick it up as an audiobook

So before i start talking about the book, i want to elaborate on the title of my review. I don't think i'd enjoy this book much if not for Travis Baldree giving it that extra omph. The performance really did bring it to life, and gave the characters color and tone.

Now for the book itself, and why i didn't feel it deserved more than 3 stars which is normally reserved for mediocre works that one could take or leave.

While the characters are complex and well developed for this stage of the story. The story itself complex, multilayered, with plenty of elements looping into each other, giving the big galaxy a suitably bustling feeling, there are also problems. Star rating reducing problems.
1.Consistent use of the same tropes. Namely "Not-even-my-final-form" and "Power of friendship". There are more in there, but i'd challenge anyone to write a book with 0 tropes in there and see how far they get. It's never the trope that's the problem, but their implementation. WW is a skilled writer, and i am 110% certain that he knows this to be a possible issue, which is, i'm guessing, why he indeed made a couple of self-aware jokes about the use of the "power of friendship" in the story. The boss fights all coming down to taking down a form after form of an enemy with the MC's resources serving as a perfect hourglass for when is the boss going to run out of new and more powerful forms robbed me of all suspense. (E.G. when MC claimed that he had 62% battery left, with a seemingly dead enemy, I knew exactly what happens next)

2. I also think author spotted this issue, but we are getting very little adventure in our action. There are some dialogue where author seems to be aware of this, and points it out in character's voice, but then we get very little of it. Titanic battles are fine, and i enjoy them, but having all this galaxy to explore while spending 90% of the time either fighting or in dialogue on a ship driving the plot forward is a bit constraining.

Those are my 2 biggest gripes with the story, each worth a star in my mind. The story isn't bad, as I said, especially narrated by one of the best VAs out there, but it's not among the best either. Worth a credit, no doubt, regardless. I am somewhat certain that this is WW's first sci-fi series, and as first effort, this stuff is amazing.

Finally, a book that focuses on my favorite character.

Will Wight does a spectacular job portraying the members of the crew and the story in this entry of The Last Horizon series is second to none. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for their next read.

Heroic played straight

Really nice to have a heroic character that's actually a hero all the way down.
