Fight, survive, adapt, and rely only on yourself. That is Derek’s creed and what's got him through the System Integration on Earth. Everything changed when the System came. Cute bunnies and beautiful butterflies became savage killing machines. Then the Invaders arrived with a single goal: to obtain ownership of this new habitable planet. War has raged ever since. None of this mattered much to Derek, aside from making living a little more perilous.

Story
Earth was invaded. Earth was conquered. And humanity was summarily subjugated, as 400,000,000 people were culled. The terrifying part was this only took the Peacekeepers a second. There wasn't even a chance for us to fight back. In the blink of an eye, questions like whether or not we're alone in the universe or at the top of the food chain were answered. We were not. Not by a long shot. Despite the mass murder, the Peacekeepers promise they're benevolent. They don't want to rule Earth. They don't want to control humanity. They just want us to stop playing around with AI and genetics.

Ryker only has one goal in his life right now: Turn a certain adventuring guild into a flaming wreck while dancing merrily through the smoldering ruins. All for the chance to get back at a handful of people. It isn’t as if they didn’t deserve it either. They had driven him from his home. Chased him physically from the very guild house itself. Simply because he wasn’t as strong as they expected him to be. As strong as he’d expected himself to be. He’d returned the next day and left with something he’d hidden away and told no one about when he found it in one of his few Dungeon Dives.

When the cultivators came to Earth, they destroyed our entire civilization in a matter of hours. Armies fell, cities burned, and that was before the moon turned red and filled our world with monsters. Now, over a decade later, what's left of humanity slaves under the heels of our Qi-infused masters. The luckiest of us might even become one of them, they say—if we serve the Dynasty well enough and harness the power of Qi. But I want none of that. It’s Drop Night, the one night every decade when the gods hand out cards to a lucky few. If you get a deck, you’re a deckbearer capable of wondrous feats within the Great Game system. You can control powerful monsters and summon mantles that let you fight alongside your beasts. Ethan Wolfe, top enforcer for the Grimm family mob, has already been overlooked on two previous Drop Nights. People of his ilk seldom receive cards, as the gods tend to favor people who follow their divine mandates, but that doesn’t mean Wolfe can’t hope.

A Fun Listen
Hal Dix is the unluckiest guy in the world. He's stuck in a boring IT job with a bully for a boss and a successful wife who makes parenting look easy. Hal plays role playing games for fun, and he's just been duped into spending all his spare cash for a bootleg version of a game that doesn't exist yet. Except when Hal tries the bootleg disc, it works. And it transports him bodily into the world of Fantasma.
Hal awakens in the game and immediately runs into trouble. Framed for the murder of a powerful city warden, he's arrested and sentenced to death. He needs to use all his wits and the points he's allocated to his luck stat to survive.
This is a solid LitRPG, an enjoyable listen. Hal is a good MC to follow, a bit awkward at times but not a sad sack. He's just reacting to events in the beginning, but soon takes control and becomes someone to cheer for. The action was fast paced. The game mechanics were incidental to the story, they didn't play a major role and it would be a fun fantasy listen even if you're not into LitRPG. The stat sheets are very short and aren't repeated too often, and Hal doesn't spend any time agonizing over point allocation. Although this is book one, it ties everything up neatly and can be read as a standalone.
The narration is really well done! The narrator performs subtle voices for the various characters and kept me listening and immersed in the story. If you're looking for a LitRPG for a teen or young reader, this book doesn't have any sex or swearing, but there are fight scenes and some references to adult themes. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

WAY WAY too much time reading over the stats!!
As in the heading the author spent way too much time reading over the stats over and over again with very little change in the first 8 chapters the stats were read out 13 time with nothing changing except a point here and there.
This was done so much so the book was hard to get through not only did the author spend so much time on the stats but then they also continue to read out what was in the main characters inventory which makes utterly no sense and took away from the book.
When you look past those things the book was not bad however extremely short when you take out all the stat and inventory fluff.
Overall the book was so so the ending was welk without spoiling anything weird and fell flat in my opinion especially if there's going to be a second book.

Loved this book! A great first novel
I really liked this book a lot. Hal was fun, and Kay? (sorry on audible so not sure if it is just K) was great. The book is about a normal guy who likes to play video games that is sucked into a fantasy world. The world translates things to him in game format, so that he understands it. So he levels and picks powers just as if he were playing at home. In fact, there is a point where he isn't sure if he is playing or if it is real.
The only beef I have is that his one singular ability, his luck, never failed. I would have liked to have seen him flub a few tries, because it got to a point where you knew he was good if he heard the slot machine sound in his head. A minor plot point. I just have to be honest.
I eagerly await book 2, and hope that next time he's not an accidental thief, but an intentional one. Go get this book, it will make a fine addition to your audible library. Oh, and Robert Scarloto does a masterful job of keeping your attention with his inflection, emotion, and pacing. I'd happily listen to him again and again.

A little to predictable
I feel this book was written with a younger audience in mind. The characters were a bit thin and not much time was speent developing them. I did enjoy the premise though and I still enjoyed it. The performer seemed to be dry reading the book almost as of he was uninterested. He also had odd pauses in the sentences.
