About this listen

John wanted a vacation. He got an apocalypse.

When John sets out for a weekend camping trip in the Yukon, he never could have imagined the world would be plunged into chaos by the System–a mystical energy wave that destroys electronics and grants game-like powers to humanity. Suddenly, animals are evolving, monsters are spawning, and John finds himself equipped with a character sheet and incredible, physics-defying skills.

But surviving in this new reality won't be easy. John will have to get back to civilization through hordes of slavering monsters. And that's just the beginning—because with the arrival of the System, John will need to help rebuild society from the ruins up… and stop humanity from destroying itself along the way.

Life in the North is the first book in The System Apocalypse, an Apocalyptic LitRPGseries that combines modern day life, science fiction and fantasy elements along with game mechanics. This series contains elements of games like level ups, experience, enchanted materials, a sarcastic spirit, mecha, a beguiling dark elf, monsters, minotaurs, a fiery red head and a semi-realistic view on violence and its effects.

Interesting concept

Post apocalypse rpg is a very interesting concept. I may be old school in disliking the modern tech that's available but it makes sense for the story. What turned me away is how much it jumps around, sometimes hard to completely follow. Not a bad story by any means and I will, at a later date, come back to the following works to finish the series.

Great story!

I am truly blown away with this story! The mc was one I connected with on a truly visceral level and, even now that the stories over, I yearn for that slight peace alluded too towards the end of the story.

The last few chapters were ones I could relate too as a Soldier and now the great wide open of Canada is on my bucket list to visit...

Nick did a great job as always on his delivery. Honestly... I’m still sitting here soaking in a great story... I highly recommend it!

If you like LitRPG give a try

Its a good read, its dark and set in a realistic tone. There is a lot of anger but its properly explained and you will want to continue on the journey through this world.

LitRPG grows on you

I'm not a gamer but I enjoy a post-apocalyptic story. This book has a novel premise, to me anyway, and was fun to read. I have just enough exposure to my sons' gaming that those aspects of the story were quickly comprehensible. I definitely recommend giving this genre a try.

not a relaxed listen

make no mistake! this is a fun and exciting book! but by no means is it relaxed.

this book is fast paced. and requires attentive listening. if you get distracted for a few seconds you will need to skip back 30s to understand what just happened.

Very Entertaining

This has a little different take on the LitRPG genre. Well worth a listen if you like this style of story, and Nick Podehl is one of the best narrators Audible has.
